Motor City Sonics

Let the Dan Gilbert/Tigers speculation begin

Recommended Posts

Not a fan of his methods in terms of making himself part of the story but I'm a fan of his desire to win.....

I've always felt that way too.

I speculated this based on some stuff I heard from family up in the Detroit area, and Lynn Henning shot it down instantly.

Luxury Tax will never be an issue under a Dan Gilbert administration.  And he would sign Manny Machado.

always interesting that the Ilitches didn't have to divest the Motor City Casino.

Marian Ilitch owned the Casino.  She didn't own the Tigers.  Mike Ilitch was the sole owner.  Not the family.

Now it's in some kind of trust.

Seems like a semantics to me. MLB basically bent the rules for them. Now that gambling is legal it shouldn't matter.  By that logic, Gilbert should have sold his interest to his uncle and then he could buy a team.

I guess that depends on whether he needs the cash.

I don't think it's semantics.  One person owns the team.  Another person owns a Casino.

The rule says an owner can't own a casino.  It doesn't say the wife of an owner can't own a casino.  That's not semantics.  That's the letter of the rule.

Lynn Henning also said Scott Sizemore was a great defensive 2B

Well they threw Dan Ewald under the bus over that issue (one of the reasons Sparky kind of turned his back on the family).

I seem to recall reading the Cleveland Cavaliers are very cheap regarding their front office. Didn't Chauncey Billups turn them down because they lowballed? How do you lowball someone with no GM experience?

Let's set the meeting. Tell the Ilitch Family we want a sit down. Now, we insist it's a public place, a bar, a restaurant, some place where there's people, so I feel safe...

Dan Gilbert bought the Cavs two years after they drafted Lebron James and he spent a lot of money to make Lebron stay in the last few years. But he numerous documented fails as owner that should give you a lot of second thoughts about him being a good sports owner.

There was this pizza baron I grew up.  He was  younger than me.  Sorta looked up to me, you know.   We did our first work together with individual pizza shops.   We made the most of it.  As much as anyone, I loved him and trusted him.   Later he had an idea to build a baseball team out of a deserted city for old ballplayers on their way to retirement.  That kid's name was Tom Monaghan and the team he invented was the Detroit Tigers.  This was a great man, a man of vision and guts.  And there isn't even a plaque or signpost or statue of him in that town.   Someone shipped him off to make a religious retreat in Florida.  No one knows who gave the order.  I knew Tom,  I knew he was headstrong,  hiding out, bleeding the scouting department dry, ignoring the minor league system and when he ended up gone, I let it go.  I said to myself This Is The Sport We've Chosen.   I didn't ask who gave the order because it had nothing to do with business.    That 1.2 Billion - in a trunk in your room.........I'm going in to take a nap.  When I wake, if the money's here, I'll know I have a partner.  If it's not, I'll know I don't.

Then this is probably a done deal.

But would he be better than current ownership?

You could say Mike failed as a Tigers owner as well but I'd take him back right about now.

Question for those more familiar with Gilbert... is he a guy that will come in and throw around a bunch of money? Or is a guy who will come in and want to rebuild things, top to bottom, with a more progressive mind? Because I'd rather have that.

Well, we could pass the hat to try to purchase the Tigers.

I'll have $100 when I win my wager at the end of the 2020 season so count me in for that.

I'm guessing anyone who buys the team will be part of an ownership group. I doubt Gilbert will pony up 1.5 billion of his own money to own the team.
