Bosio Fired

Really?  Now do you feel a little stupid?  This reminds me a bit of the Duke Lacrosse rape case.  There was a rush to judgment and the boys were tried in the court of public opinion.

Meanwhile, someone get Shelton some smelling salts in case he has to hear a word like Spider Monkey.

As a kid, I can remember running home to tell mom about someone calling me a name.  This is what she said to me.

Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.

We have come a long way as a society and I am glad.  However, there are far too many people walking around with a chip on their shoulder.  We are teaching our youth to be perpetually offended by seemingly harmless words.  Add spider monkey to the list of words that cannot be said.

We should start a thread and model it after the Christmas Pageant episode of Southpark.  Someone can post a word and  if anyone registered on this board is offended by the word we can eliminate it from this forum.

Your entire post assumes that what Bosio told USA Today is 100 percent accurate.

I was on vacation and this is my first morning back.  It wasn’t a $15,000 one.  Maybe $5000 For 4 people.  So I didn’t see this develop   Just saw the breaking news and continued on laying on the beach in the Gulf

Firing Bosio over his claim of events is silly.  But I don’t believe him.  This wasn’t just Avila. You don’t do this without getting corporate type attorneys involved to make sure you are safe from any litigation.  It had nothing to do with baseball performance or wanting someone else in there.  Avila is the public face of the org so he’s the one out there. But this wasn’t his decision alone.

Sure this kind of thing could have been let go decades ago but decades ago we were more of a backwards country when it comes to what is acceptable to say. If you think that’s a shame then I feel sorry for you.

No I didn't.  But I caution the rush to judgment and trying someone in the court of public opinion.

And I also believe that we have become hyper sensitive.

There was no rush to judgement.

I was at a Super Bowl party several years ago and made a "short bus" comment in front of family of a special needs child.  I immediately realized what I said and just wanted to crawl into a hole.

We can lament PC all we want and say sticks and stones and all of that, but sometimes words can be pretty hurtful.

Minor league baseball game several years ago, I used the phrase "hoisted by my own petard," that was mis-heard by the group of challenged folks a few rows in front and their aides. I got some looks and definitely did not say that word, just one that sounded like it.

Reminds me of when people use a certain synonym for stingy.

Bosio was dumped in Chicago in part so Maddon could bring on Jim Hickey, who worked in Tampa with him, so there's a pattern to that, too.

I was looking at that right about the time you posted this.  I thought he was dumped mid season, but it was actually mid October.

I have played or coached various sports throughout my life.

I have never heard anyone called a spider monkey.  Only a few monkey references, and that was 30 years ago, and that was never towards a specific individual (e.g. you guys look like a monkey trying to **** a football, get in here you monkeys).

At a minimum, I would suggest it is out of date.  I suspect there is more here than Bosio lets on, but that is purely speculative.

I think people bagging on the clubhouse attendant are completely off the mark.

The only time in recent memory I can think of Spider Monkey being used is by the kids in Talledega Nights.

Remember years ago when Howard Cosell supposedly referred to wide receiver Alvin Garrett as a little monkey, on Monday Night Football I believe? I don’t think his comment was intended to be racist at all but it was a news item for a while. Hope I’m remembering this correctly. This current incident brought this story to mind. Anyone recall that?

Yep.  and Howard was far from a racist.

I'm a reasonably well-informed man, with fairly wide knowledge of American cultural references both current and historical, but never once have I ever heard the term "spider monkey" in reference to black people, and I probably couldn't even count beyond the fingers on one hand all of the times I've even heard only "monkey" applied, as there are at least a dozen other epithets that are used more commonly.  The only time I know for a fact I ever heard that was the Cosell thing. I've heard another word attached to "monkey" to make an epithet, but it's not spider.

I simply can't believe that some nondescript clubhouse kid hearing the term "spider monkey" applied directly and only to some white player from across the room once and only once would jump right into blowing the whistle on one of the most powerful people on the team, knowing it would get him fired. The story makes no sense other than as a paranoid fantasy. This is especially true since none of the players, including Stumpf, have still ever even heard the term, except in this specific case.

Now, if the real story were everything Bosio said it was, only with the term "spider monkey" changed to an n-bomb, then that would begin to make some sense. I doubt we'll ever know, but I'm as certain as can be that Chris Bosio's story is either missing some significant details, or is a lie fabricated to protect his public image as a fair-minded leader who would never dabble in casual racism.

If Bosios telling of what happened is true this whole thing is a joke.  That I am assuming was preempted because of the 'be offended by everything' culture the internet propagates.

Billy Packer got in trouble for calling a black player a “tough little monkey”.  He took some heat at first but history had shown he said that about guys like Bobby Hurley too.  But the point is that term is not socially acceptable.

I assume Bosio said something besides spider monkey.  The attendant reported it and the club had to act.

People have no backbone if they are offended by short bus comments?

if someone makes a "short bus" joke, not knowing that a person who heard it has a special needs kid, and that person is offended, should the person who made the joke be fired from their job?

do you think its possible that the attendant misheard bosio? or wasnt aware of the context of the comment?

I'd say it depends on the situation and I don't have enough context to state definitively.

But if you don't know your audience, you have to be careful about your jokes.

That's possible.  Kind of like Edman's story, I've had someone not hear me completely when I said "that figures" once.

If he had, the people to whom Bosio was speaking would have supported Bosio. They apparently didn't.
