pitching and defense win titles...also hitting.

It's also managers, smart front offices and the best announcers in the business. I see you, Rod. 😂

Lazy question.

Who needs a shortstop?

Maybe the diamondbacks?

I could not find a team that really needs an SS.

The Orioles will need one after they trade Machado.

Not Jose Iglesias at the end of his arb clock.

He doesn't have the glove to play shortstop on a regular basis.

Brad Miller isn't much of a shortstop and he can't really hit anymore either. He's just a place holder while the hope prospect boy can turn it around.

Machado slides over if we can find a taker for Iggy.  His bat will play better there as an interim.

I doubt that our 2020 SS is in the system.

Sure, but they thought enough of him to bring him in. If they were in the market for Iglesias why bother trading for Miller first?

So we conclude that Avila thinks Iglesias is worth something and so wants something worth more than Brad Miller back for him?

He will be when we move Fulmer to the Rockies.

All true. I didn’t realize that Miller had been DFA earlier and the brewers just took him for nothing. I incorrectly assumed that they were looking for a shortstop and for some reason targeted him as a bounce back candidate. I’m well aware Miller sucks now but it wasn’t too long ago he was good and plenty of teams like to go after guys like that.

Machado is definitely the prototypical replacement level middle infielder. If Iglesias is traded it seems likely that machado holds down SS for the rest of the season. Although, I could see a guy like Ron Rod being thrown in there instead.

As for 2020, I think there is a somewhat decent chance that Sergio Alcantara could be the SS for that team. He’s at AA right now, with a 675 ops, and by many accounts his defense is very good. He’s only 21 and this is his first year at AA. He’s got a chance to be a 700 ops guy with a great glove if things break right.

From Bowden's column today.......:

Quote

4. Red Sox obtain Shane Greene from the Detroit Tigers for Jalen Beeks, Josh Ockimey and Alex Scherff

Boston’s starting rotation woes have recently been resolved with the reemergence of knuckleballer Steven Wright, who is 2-1 with a 1.23 ERA thanks to three strong starts (he went 13-6 with a 3.33 ERA in 2016).  In addition, lefty Eduardo Rodriguez is finally healthy, and he’s already 9-1 with a 3.59 ERA, leaving the return of starter Drew Pomeranz without a spot in the deep rotation. Therefore, the Red Sox’s biggest need is bullpen depth and although they might not have enough left in the farm system thanks to recent trades, injuries and PED suspensions to acquire stud relievers like Hand, Herrera or Iglesias, they do have enough to acquire Greene.

Perhaps a deal of left-handed pitcher Beeks, first baseman Ockimey and right-handed pitcher Scherff could land Greene. Greene, 29, is 2-3 with a 3.57 ERA and 19 saves, and would provide depth in the bullpen.

Pay $ite - Bowden: Here are six trades AL contenders should make before the deadline.

KC did not get a ton in return. The Nats' #10, #11 prospect and another one.
