2018 Pistons Offseason

I just wonder if Allen Iverson or Michael Jordan has a role with the NBA/MGM deal?

I'm surprised something like this hadn't happened already, TBH.

Green seems to me to be the sort that he would be difficult to be around.

He's got the needle down pat.

And, tanking now makes no sense for the Pistons for a couple of reasons:

  1. You don't tank when so much of your conference is tanking/sucking. The Pistons have a chance to win a playoff series after 10 years of not doing so.
  2. The Pistons have too much talent to execute a real tank. This team can't be as bad as the worst teams in the NBA without demolishing this roster over the course of multiple seasons and/or unless multiple guys miss the entire season.

yeah - I don't see how they can tank. I think it's going to be the same story as since Jennings went down - team needs a NBA caliber PG who can stay on the floor. They will probably play competitive ball this season - as long as Reggie stays on the floor - then when he goes down again or is hurting it will be right back to 40 win purgatory. Another PG has to be their number one priority.

The Pistons can't tank even if they wanted to.  Nobody is taking those horrendous contracts.  Maybe Drummond but I don't think they would get anything in return that would make dealing him worthwhile.  SVG (Gores) made this bed, now they have to sleep in it.

Not sure I agree that they can't tank (I prefer the term "rebuild"). All you really have to do is trade Drummond, which they need to do regardless. Reggie will either be injuired - in which case it doesn't matter - or show he can play - in which case he can be traded since there will only be a year and a half left on his deal. You're stuck with Blake but I don't think he alone prevents you from a rebuild. He's an old Blake, not the Blake of old.

I don't see any trade of Drummond that makes the Pistons appreciably better. For all his faults (of which there aren't as many as some here seem to think), he's still a big presence in the lineup and is just beginning to hit his prime. It's a giant contract but he's the one player who actually (mostly) earns his pay mainly due to Griffin and Jackson always being injured which makes their contracts immovable unless a desperate GM like SVG comes along.

If they could deal Drummond for a high level shooting guard or winger, I'd do it, but I don't think somebody like Booker or McCollum is going to be available.

I agree, a Drummond trade wouldn't make the team better this year - it'd be part of a rebuild for the future. That means getting an early first round pick and some combination of an expiring or multiple smaller contracts that can more easily be flipped.

Steven Adams on Reggie Jackson:

https://clutchpoints.com/thunder-news-steven-adams-goes-in-on-pistons-reggie-jackson-in-new-book/

Quote

As for the controversial out of bounds call given to us that everyone says went off our guy Reggie Jackson’s hand? I couldn’t possibly comment. Reggie was in a three-on-one fast break situation and chose to take it hismelf instead of passing to KD or Russ. That’s far more controversial to me.

Quote

When Russ came back from injury and took over the starting spot again, Reggie wasn’t happy. We were just looking at him thinking, ‘You’ve got to be some kind of fool to seriously think you should be starting over Russ.’ But that’s exactly what he thought, and that kind of thinking went against everything the Thunder was about. Yes, we competed in practice and fought for the starting positions, but once the actual game starts we all do whatever is required of us, no matter how much or how little.

“When the trade deadline got near, we knew Reggie wanted to leave. And because we knew he wanted to leave, we wanted him to leave as well. Why would we want to work every day with someone who wanted to be somewhere else? When he was finally traded to the Detroit Pistons, we forgot about him pretty quickly because we had new guys to welcome to the team.

This is a team that doesn't rebound so Westbrook can grab the board and average a triple double. Westbrook is also the same player who gets mad when teammates don't jack up shots so he can get an assist. Westbrook is a better player but doesn't seem like a much better person than Jackson.

Yup.  But all good teams need someone to play that punk role, so we're good.

The guys he played with (KD, Harden & Westbrook) have/had the same reputation. They write off all the problems on Reggie, but Durant & Westbrook couldn't get along either.

Yeah but you tolerate it with those guys because they are perennial MVP contenders.  Jordan was one of the biggest pricks to ever grace an NBA court but he's Jordan so you deal with it.  When you're Reggie Jackson (the basketball player), not so much.

In any event, he could have grown up since then so who knows what kind of teammate he is now.

Right, but they had/have a tendency to act like Reggie held them back from winning a title or destroyed their team chemistry. The reality is their core was made up of young guys who didn't get along. And that persisted long after Reggie was out.

westbrook is a complete ***.  i havent heard that about durant.

the difference between those guys and reggie jackson is that those guys are all timers and reggie is not.

You haven't heard about Durant being a jerk?

Of course it all depends on chemistry since we haven't seen the "Big 3" play together for any length of time but I'd be very surprised if they don't top that 37.5 win number significantly if healthy.  I'd expect around 45 wins if the top guys remain relatively healthy.  Of course that's unlikely to happen so I wouldn't bet the house on it.

Does anybody actually think that 37 wins is their ceiling?  I'm as down on the Pistons as anybody but that's an extremely pessimistic take IMO.

  • Thanks 1
