GAME 17

No one passed.  This is getting too easy.

BTW - it's an exceptional sad line when you give up 5 hits and 2 walks, and still manage to give up 8 earned.

Impressive that Nova allowed 8 baserunners (5H, 2BB and a FC) and stranded ZERO of them

Does anyone think Miguel will play out his contract through 2023?

I would like to see him retire soon because I don't want to think of him as the lumbering, overmatched hitter that he resembles 95% of the time.  You can make a case that he might be the worst starting player in MLB.  When your OBP is similar to Jeimer Candelario's BA, that is never a good sign.

174 hits and 19 home runs to get to 3000 and 500 seems like it might take him to the end of his contract.  yikes.

Exactly.

Unless the Tigers offered him something close to $32 M to walk away a year early and he values that one year of time more than the difference between the two, he is very likely to play the contract out.

He has to be getting close to passing people on strikeouts.

He is.  But why should I spoil it?

He'd better or I'm out a Mounds Bar.

I see a scenario where he retires as an active player, but stays on the payroll in some sort of community service capacity.  He has pride and likely won’t want to hang on hitting .250.  And the Tigers won’t want to cut him.  The contract is a sunk cost. They’ll reach a compromise.

Does it truly matter if the Tigers pay him $32 M to play or not play?

I honestly think current frustration is clouding judgement a little, and after he is retired for a bit, we are going to remember the good stuff.

I remember Carlos Guillen very, very fondly, and I consider his HR off of Weaver an absolute high point despite him being completely washed up then.

I will mostly remember Cabrera as a great hitter, but the end of his career will tarnish that memory a bit.  Most great players have a painful year or two at the end, but if he continues at this rate through '23 that's a lot of years.

He played 162 games through minor injuries year in and year out with extra weight on his frame. Likely took a toll. I'll remember him as the best Tiger bat of my lifetime, with Mr Tiger the best all around

How do you remember Al Kaline?

I  caught the end of his career, so I don't remember greatness.   I knew he had once been a fantastic player,  but I did not experience it as a fan.  Had I been born ten years earlier, I would have a completely different memory.

Also, Kaline really only had two bad years at the end (the ones I remember the most unfortunately) while Cabrera has already had 3 bad years (one of them not really bad but only 157 AB) and could have 4 more if he doesn't get going.

I reckon the 2020 season to be a bust .. a lost season that will add a few numbers to a player's career during a shortened season that probably ought not have been played at all.

Looking forward to 2021 thru 2023 .. based upon Miggy's 2020 stat lines through August 16 .. with 4 HR's and 11 RBI's in 19 games.

Over the course of a full season .. if Miggy averages 125 games per season .. equates to average of 26 HR's and 72 RBI's per season.

I think I would gladly accept those numbers per season through 2023.

However, ...188 BA & .377 SLG are an insult to Miggy's former greatness.  Ray Oyler comes to mind.

....

FWIW:  Albert Pujols in 15 games this year:  .186 BA, .356 SLG, 3 HR's, 8 RBI's.  In generations past, prior to multi-million $ contracts .. Miggy and Albert both probably would have already retired.
