Will Datsyuk get his Olympic gold? We should know in the next hour of two. No cakewalk. Germany 1 (Olympic Athletes of)Russia 1 after 2 periods.

Russians win gold 4-3 in OT. Crazy game. Russians took 2-1 lead with 6 minutes left in regulation but the Germans tied it just 10 seconds later and went ahead with 3 minutes to go. When the Russians got a 2-minute penalty with 2:15 to go, you'd think the Germans would be able to run out the clock but the Russians tied it with 55 seconds to go. The winning goal was on an OT powerplay. Datsyuk said that this was his greatest achievement, bigger than a Stanley Cup. Yeah, ok.

A 4-pt weekend and the Wings are on the fringe of playoff contention. 5 points back of Columbus, each have 20 games left.

But I expect (and hope) the Wings will be a weaker team by this time tomorrow.

Wings' playoff push stalls, lol, with a 2-1 loss in St. Louis last night. The Wings were being shutout until a goal by AA with under 2 to go.

Wings are tied at 7th-8th-9th worst overall with Chicago and the Rangers.  Edmonton and Montreal are 4 points behind and seem to be the limit as to how fall the Wings could fall in the standings towards a higher pick, barring a lottery win.  On the other hand, a cluster of 3 teams just 2 or 3 points ahead of them in Florida, NYI and Carolina, so a Wings winning streak could push them dangerously close to losing a top 10 pick position.

The Wings are in the midst of a brutal stretch of 10 of 11 games on the road, most against playoff teams. Do the Wings have a Tigers-like plunge in them the final month? Lost 4-3 in Winnipeg last night.

I read a sobering stat posted on another board:

After getting 19 points in the first 19 games of the season, Mantha only had 18 points in the next 45.

The Wings sure stink but Witkowski had an old timey stand and throw fight that was fun:

This 3-game losing streak in regulation has given the Wings some breathing room in the "race" for a low placement. Columbus, Florida and Carolina all seem to be safely above the Wings, 7 points or more ahead with 17 to go.  Rangers and Islanders at 4 points ahead have a bit of a cushion over the Tatar-less and Mrazek-less Wings. 8th worst Chicago is only 2 points ahead of the Wings but is a better team. The Wings are currently 7th worst. Montreal is just 1 point behind. Edmonton 4 back and Vancouver 5 back. Really looks like the Wings will end up somewhere between 5th worst and 8th worst overall.

Mantha with a 3-point night in Boston, 2 goals and an assist. Wings lose 6-5 in OT.

Watching Coreau move around in the crease is painful.

The Wings would be in a real hot mess without Howard.  Coreau has no business being in the NHL.

The writers who wrote articles pumping his tires last year/offseason should resign.  I have no clue how you could watch him play and think he had any real future in the league, let alone think he's the goalie of the future.  He's a cool story of a guy who worked really hard to get to the NHL and he's uh... tall I guess.  But any time he has to move around it is such a mess.

Hopefully they play him more....

Coreau is a good story, and I wish him as much success as possible.

That said -- he's the kind of goalie you trot out when you're "rebuilding on the fly" (oxymoron).

Also painful: listening to Jack Edwards call 6 goals against.

Nielsen out for a couple of games, Svechnikov called up.

Has been a rough year for Svech,  expectations downgraded, but not writing him off yet.

I would like to see what him and Hicketts can do to close out the season over having say Booth/Witkowski/Oullette (and of course others but trying to be realistic...) in the lineup.  It's a shame they burned a couple call ups over the Bertuzzi/Coreau moves to make them AHL playoff eligible or else I would say give Hronek a taste too.

Las Vegas in town tonight. Here's the line-up of the team with the 2nd most points in the West, tied for 4th in the NHL. Unbelievable, because on paper that looks like, well, an expansion team.

Jonathan Marchessault - William Karlsson - Reilly Smith
David Perron - Erik Haula - Alex Tuch
Ryan Carpenter - Cody Eakin - Tomas Tatar
Tomas Nosek - Pierre-Edouard Bellemare - Ryan Reaves

Brayden McNabb - Colin Miller
Shea Theodore - Deryk Engelland
Jon Merrill - Brad Hunt

Marc-Andre Fleury
Maxime Lagace

Tatar takes a penalty midway through 2nd but the Wings give up a shorthanded goal on a 2 on 0 breakaway. Cool.

Zetterberg straight up called out Mantha (not by name but it was obvious) after the game.  Can't blame him for being frustrated.  Glad I didn't watch this, it sounds like the Wings didn't even show up.  SAD
