They either had to tear it all down and tank or do a move like this. Is your odds higher of getting into contention with Drummond and Griffin and then needing to find another guy or two somehow or with hitting on multiple high draft picks in a row?

Given they have been irrelevant for a decade and no one goes to the arena, it makes sense the franchise from a business standpoint would do this.

Eh, Chauncey and Ben Wallace were stars. Advanced stats just weren't en vogue yet in 2004.

At least right away, the Pistons could stagger Griffin and Drummond’s minutes to ensure one is always out there. They would play together at the beginning and end of games, but not much in the middle together. That will help spacing and help keep one guy out there at all times

Stan the GM may have made a trade, but he didn't fire Stan the coach. If this trade leads Stan the coach to abandoning his 'Unit 1"/'Unit 2" paradigm, that will be almost as noteworthy as the trade. :P

Blake and Andre just have to get a 20 or 30 point lead so the Buycks - Galloway - SJ - Tolliver - Moreland unit doesn't blow it. Simple

Bullock and Kennard can be nice complimentary pieces as very good 3 point shooters and Stan probably doesn't want to part with them if he doesn't have too. I assume everyone else is on the trading block ahead of them but I'm not sure how much Stanley or Elleson could fetch and then its just a bunch of bench pieces and a broken down PG. I can't imagine they could pry another star with what they have left but who knows.

Moreland won't sniff the court anymore.

Lowe always does a good job. That said, I can't say I'll be as upset as many in here will be if we're a perennial 50 win team for a few years. At least it's a positive direction and an enjoyable season for a while. As always, this quote " Through that lens, Detroit traded a first-round pick and some cap space that wouldn't net anything better for a star. " is the real situation at the end of the day and we have three ways to try and build a winner. Take a chance with a trade like this, get lucky with lower tier guys turning into a great 5-some , or blow it up and that's just not gonna happen.

you know how much this trade moves the needle?  it moved the pistons forum ahead of the red wings forum on the mts home page.

Good eye, you noticed!

Yeah, I think the headline of that article was a bit misleading. I took that article to mean that the pistons could be pretty good and at the high end of the mediocre spectrum (a playoff team that might make some noise but not a championship contender). When I first saw the article I was expecting it to say that the pistons were going to be very mediocre.

It is so hard in the NBA to build a championship team. I have no problem trying to make moves to get into that second tier of teams. It’s entertainment after all. It’s a lot more fun to follow a team with a winning record.

The Griffin press conference is at 4. Still can't practice since not everyone has taken their physical.

Pistons.com should stream it.

i think that when drummond/griffin/reggie are all healthy and play together, the pistons will be pretty good and a top caliber team in the east.

but as any clipper fan (all 12 of them) will tell you: griffin is never healthy for long.

i get that the pistons were only going to acquire a star player via trade or the draft and that were never going to tank so our ability to acquire one there is limited.  but i cant help but feel like 1) we gave up a lot more than we needed to; and 2) its going to look really bad in 3 years when we'll have blake, andre, and 12 g leaguers.

again, stan wins the trade on talent, but loses on the cap.

all that said, im excited for watching the pistons again and thats something.  theyre the talk of the league for five minutes, which is 4 minutes and 59 seconds more than they have been in the last decade.

SVG needs to land one more piece for the rotation, unless we are supposed to believe that somehow Stanimal's performance last night is remotely repeatable going forward.

This is where I'm at.   Also the Griffin contract looks bad but lets say he stays healthy the next year(big if I know) is it out of the realm of possibility that we could dump in a year or year and a half from now to somebody if we decide that we want to go in another direction?

Remotely?

If he did it once he can do it again.

youd have to find another sucker like stan van.  griffin will be two years older and likely even more on the decline and even more expensive.

i think that contract would be very very difficult to dump.

but someone once said theres a stan van born every minute so you never know...

Hood is an upgrade but he will get expensive this summer. The Pistons probably couldn't afford him.

I'm fine trading Stanley, but not for a 30 game rental. I would rather keep him and his cheap contract and see if he improves.

Same here. There is still something there with Stanley, but  he needs to show it now.

O/U on questions asked to Johnson and Reed during this press conference?

Reed could actually going to be important for us. Moreland is just bad. We saw that last night. If Reed can go out there and just be a good backup, we solidified an important area of the bench. Especially because Blake can also play the backup 5.
