Potential Democratic Candidates for 2020

I'm worried about a California liberal originally from San Francisco in a national election. I don't know how she will do in the Midwest.

Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Virgina are the States Harris will need to win over. Florida would be a nice surprise but it’s best to count on it being red.

I don't think anyone really pays much attention to where candidates are from anymore. That may still have some currency in the old south, but they just all went for a New Yorker, so even that probably isn't true

The GOP might like using "SF Liberal" as a tag line, but it's only going to work with voters that are lost to Democrats anyway, so the Dems are best to ignore it.

She's not my preferred choice, but she's probably the best of the "coastal liberal" candidates.

It's still early, though.

Dont forget about Arizona... that's a state that has really evolved in the Trump era

Trump only won Florida by  1.2%.

Trump gathered 202 EC votes in states with a >5% margin

For Hillary she got 195, along with Colorado's 9 with a 4.91% margin.

Trump's highest margin under 5% was NC with 3.66%

Ohio is the one state that confuses me... I'd like to see if there's any other recent polling.  Did they hate Hillary that bad or at least not warm to her in Cincy, Cleveland and Columbus and not vote?  I wouldn't write that off yet for a D.

Cincinnati and Columbus have actually drifted left in the Trump era.

The issue for Dems in Ohio is that the Appalachian portion of the state (ie. Southern Ohio) went from being reliably Democratic to breaking hard for Trump in 2016. Combine that with the Youngstown area flipping in 2016, it makes it hard to see them winning there in 2020

I don't know how big it plays election wise but one big issue for farmers in the lake Erie watershed is run-off and they are dead set against any liberals coming in to tell them they have to stop dumping so much phosphate fertilizer. If a few people get killed by poisoned water in Toledo, screw 'em.

She grew up in Berkeley when her parents were grad students(=poor), went to high school in Montreal  and undergrad at Howard (DC). Law school was in SF. Plenty of liberal there, but not that much SF except law school - which is its own world no matter where it happens to be.

I had thought she was a DA in San Francisco before becoming Attorney General.

Her comments about putting coal out of business didn't play well in rural and southern Ohio.

2016 Ohio Map by county:

It won't be as red in 2020 without Obama or Hillary to rail against, but it will remain red overall.

in 2018 Ohio ranked 5th for coal burned behind TX, IN, KY, MO. TX burns the most by far but is also a leading state for building renewables capacity.

Dems have lost the 4 counties on the south shore of Lake Erie between Toledo and Cleveland since 2008 so maybe the run-off issue is playing politically. Several of these communities have been hit with costs in recent years to upgrade their sewage systems.

Appalachia was still pretty red in the Obama years (so I was off the mark there), but the margins in 2016 are eye popping in those counties still.

2016 looks as much like losing Dayton, Mahoning Valley and the Turnpike Counties between Toledo and Cleveland really hurt Clinton.

I drive through that area every year anytime I drive to my parents' house.  It's not surprising.  That really bright red county in western Ohio is Mercer, which is a county I referred to growing up as "Hitler's Wet Dream." Nothing but blonde-haired German descendants with like five different last names you don't hear anywhere else.

I looked at some of the larger blue counties and it appears the R vote stayed the same but the D vote dropped around 5 points from 12 to 16.

I don't have it in me to look at the other red counties.  I'm sure it's in the data that Manafort gave the Russians.

Howard Schultz appears to be the flavor of the month for people who are going to vote for Donald Trump in 2020.

It's their dream scenario.  They will do everything they can to put him on as many ballots as possible.

Isn’t Mercer County Home to JD Vance of Hillbilly Elgergy fame? It seems a lot like the area around Huntington WVa. The I 77 and I 81 corridors will stay red forever or at least the rest of my life.

Where's the intolerance?

You're telling me you missed the part where they conflated entire counties of farmers of german descent with hitler?

It's only an "ism" if a lefty says so, apparently....

1. It's probably not the greatest taste, but consult Webster's, look up "tolerance" and get back to me.

2. Donald Trump has, in the past, conflated Mexicans as "drug dealers, criminals, rapists." You support Donald Trump. Hard to take your righteous indignation seriously tbh.

3. Edman isnt a part of the "left"... he's probably more conservative than you are. At least by the pre-Trump definition
