I would say cutting internet and only having cable would be a better way to get me away from the tv. Everything good is on the internet.

Calling out BS on myself...  I found a site that discusses how ISP are immune to being sued for Cyberbullying.  It would seem that this would also cover illegal or other "dangerous" sites that an end user might try to access, so to that end I wouldn't expect to see ISPs blocking certain sights just because it might get sued. That's not to say that ISPs might not still decide to censor certain sites for some other reason.

Re: the "BS on myself" .. I have this little love/hate relationship going on right now. Generally speaking, I don't tend to look to gov't, especially at the federal level, to fix anything.  Then I hear about this kind of bullying thing that's been going on at my grandson's high school, & all over, called Blue Whale.  It starts out innocently enough, then escalates to the point that 4 kids in a period of 10 months have committed suicide. & while I bristle at the idea of "gov't intervention", there's part of me that thinks "Can't somebody with power get off their dead *** & do something about this?"

When I took my "new" job back in January, I took a fairly significant pay cut.  We moved to Gaylord & have had to go thru some decisions on finances.  I had AT&T U-Verse for TV in Midland, but that's not an option here.  I knew I wanted good Internet, so I signed up for the Charter bundle.  The Internet is fantastic.  The TV is the worst I've ever experienced .. especially the DVR.  I reached a breaking point, & cut that cord.  In researching things, I decided to cash in on AT&T's beckoning me back & get DIRECTV.  Was supposed to receive $300.  They only sent $100.  The package they offered now does not get ESPN/FSN-DET, so I have to upgrade.  I do.  They change again .. Still no FSN/DET.  Last night I started going thru the 100+ channels I'm supposed to get .. a full 30+ are infomercials 24/7.

I take full responsibility for it .. I don't blame anybody else .. but I am livid!  Now, even though I'd like to just cut the whole thing, I am in a contract .. & as I mentioned, I'm making less money so I don't have the cash to just buy myself out of it.

How long have you had directv. I believe there is a window in which you can still cancel it.

good luck with AT&T. We have a gigabit IP line and the service is great - but dealing with them on the TV end is very difficult - which I did not expect as working with them as a cell phone carrier had never been a problem. But when we took on the service they were in the middle of converting marketing  jargon - we ended up signed up for direct TV and Uverse - which at that time were still billed as different services. Took us several months to get it straightened out and we did not get back any of the double billed amounts. Yes we had clicked on the wrong box, but really......

I've had Direct Tv for around 20 years.  Since they have been taken over by AT&T they have went to ****.  I have to take a half day off tomorrow to be here so they can send people to fix what they ****ed up.

I never had this problem until...

I feel the same way. I had DIRECTV years ago .. they were fine. Now? Not so much.

AT&T is really awful when it comes to customer service.  When I signed up for their wireless, I was given free phones because I had DIRECTV. This is probably 6 years ago. They didn't tell me WHY the phones were free .. I switched to U-Verse TV 2 years ago & they let me keep the phones, `cuz it's still AT&T .. but again never told me why.  When we moved & had to cancel, my wireless bill doubled.  Then to try to get it back down, I got DIRECTV.  It has been an unmitigated disaster .. & they still won't reduce my wireless bill.  & in order to leave them, I have to pay a huge fee.

I was really impressed with their support. <sarc>  After spending 3 hours in support chat, then on the phone (with about 6 different people between the two) I didn't find anyone who could spell, speak, or even come close to mastering the English language.  At what point do you finally scream and say "may I please talk to someone who can speak ****ing English?"

It was also obvious, none of these people had the slightest clue how to fix my problem.  They actually made is worse - now we are here - taking a half day off.

And I told them upfront - I need a new b-band converter.  Ok, I'll send you a new receiver.  I don't need a receiver, I need the pigtail.  I will send you both.  Nope, only got the receiver.  Guess what, doesn't work.  Do I need a b-band converter with this one.  Nope.  After 3 more people and an hour and a half - you need a b-band converter.  That's what I told you in the beginning and you didn't send one.  Tech guys can be there Monday, are you available?

And we pay how much a month for this ****?  Reimbursed for downtime, taking time off work?  Ha!

****in' Nazi's!

Do you know for sure if those 4 suicides are confirmed?  The wiki page on the "game" says that there have been claims of kids committed suicide world wide but nothing has been confirmed: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Whale_(game)

Snopes also says lots of rumors and urban legends about the "game" but few solid facts: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/blue-whale-game-suicides-russia/

I am a little late ot this one, but I went to Youtube TV over a year ago and am very happy with it.  As a matter of fact, when I went in to the Xfinity store to return my modem (bought my own) and cable box, the guy that was helping me got me a better deal on internet by bundling internet with TV on a promo price.  I ended up going home with a new cable box, which is sitting unopened in my laundry room still.

It's very difficult to confirm the suicides, as nobody in the schools or in law enforcement wants to give full details.  I've now seen it dialed back to say it was all just a terrible coincidence .. even local media has refused to investigate it .. they just print/report what officials say.  My daughter, who is a school teacher, has tried to start a kind of "pink whale" movement, doing acts of kindness & the like, & has been met with opposition because they don't want to admit there was an issue before.

We are still happy with Charter for Internet only, FireTV device, plus our Sony Vue subscription.  DVR works great, though it is slightly lower resolution than PPV.  But honestly, even on our 60” tv, the dvr picture is fine.  And we get all the sports channels, including the local games.

I did the “box stays in the box” in the basement deal a while back. But it ended up being basically the same price (but then the local tv taxes or whatever made it like 2 bucks more). I would do it again if I could save a bit more money. Probably time for a visit to the xfinity store.

My bill went from 65 to 40.  Even with a little more ancillary cost, it's still much better.

Quick ancillary question. We've cut the cable and increased internet speed. The indoor antenna for over the air channels works fine except for one issue. Depending on which way we point the antenna we either get WWJ TV (62) or WTVS (56), but not both.

Here's my quandary, I know they both share the same antenna site in Oak Park (I believe it's off 8 Mile, just north of the old WWJ-AM transmitter building). Why would receive one and not the other? According to the information I've found for aiming antennas they are only about two tenth's of a degree different from each other.

Anyone have any ideas?

Lots of weird stuff can happen with radio signals. How far are you turning it to get one vs the other? Those are both pretty high frequency broadcasts and the higher the frequency the greater the tendency for a radio signal to bounce off a hard surface instead of passing through it or diffracting around it. If there is a large structure somewhere between that creates a reflection of one of the signals strongly in your direction, the bounce could be stronger than the direct signal, and your receiver may then be rejecting the weaker direct signal, which will be out of phase with the stronger bounce. It's also possible, but less likely that if the two signals are right on top of another, one is stronger and the frequencies are not far apart, your receiver can't pick out the weaker one when pointed right at the stronger one. The better the quality of the receiver, the less likely that problem should be however.

I finally found a spot in the apartment where I can get both both stations and their side bands. It was a bit like the old days using rabbit ears and tin foil.

Right now I’m considering a Hulu plus subscription. It seems to have most of the channels I watch. At least until we see the fallout of the Disney-Fox merger

@Gehringer_2

it looks like att fiber and gigabit is now available at my address here in A2.

what is the physical connection that needs to be made from the pole to the home? I assume we have an att line extending to the house somewhere, but we have never had a landline in this house.

I will likely sign up for this to get an unlimited data cap so I can stream 4K content again.

damn - I typed out an answer to this and my usually rock sold Lenovo took a powder on me just as I was finishing. OK here goes again....

the fiber comes along the utility poles like a phone cable - or underground I suppose if you have it. They attach a splitter to the fiber cable and run a line down to your house from the pole that looks much like an old telephone pair line,  i.e., flat, but a little smaller. That contains one fiber lead and a bunch of structural reinforcement material. That terminates at a box on the outside wall, much like a cable service. I watched them make that splice. The fiber is tiny, barely visible to the naked eye. From the box they run a light weight fiber line (about 1/8" diam) into your house. That terminates in a small (just few inches across) fiber to ethernet modem. This is a low voltage device that has to be powered externally - typically with a wall wart. Then a short Cat6/7 patch into your router. I assume at some point they will be rolling out routers that have direct fiber inputs to eliminate the extra modem. I have all the fiber stuff just on top of the drop ceiling and the router high on an inside basement wall so only short lengths of cat6 lines to and from the router into the ceiling are visible.

My ATT set-top boxes connect via cat6 lines from the router just like a regular LAN line to a computer, so the distinction of video vs data service in terms of byte flow in the billings is totally artificial - all the video that I pay for as part of my TV service which ATT doesn't count as IP data,  is still IP data. (I so have an unlimited data plan anyway, but even if I didn't they still don't count anything that goes through the set-top box as data).

The newer TV does wireless but I added an ethernet switch so I could hard wire both the set-top box and the TV, which like most recent sets has it's own WebOS. The switch also supports a third CAT6 to a PC with a video capture system. Getting this working usefully is a last hurdle in dumping the TV part of the bill.

I have one month left on my AT&T wireless contract. When I had to dump U-Verse because I moved, my bill doubled.  They told me I could bring it back to what it was if I signed up for DirecTV, so I did.  Bill remained the same.  I'm done with them, but living in northern Michigan I'm a little more limited in terms of what will work & what won't.  I'm probably going to go with Verizon or Cricket for my wireless. I'd like to cut the cord completely & just stream but I have a DirecTV contract that goes another year...so I'm thinking I'll get Charter TV back. They'll pay off my DirecTV & I'll use them for 6 months before deciding what's next .. If you see me on the news it's because I cracked under the strain of having to watch Charter cable TV again.  Ugh....

Cricket is AT&T. I switched from Verizon to AT&T prepaid. The prices for their prepaid are pretty good. Adding two others to my prepaid and setting up an autopay, I pay $25 a month for 8 gigs of data. Unlike Cricket, you get the full AT&T network and don't get throttled.

Cox gave me a good enough deal to come back. By the time I paid for unlimited data and a streaming service it was more than I'm paying now. Check back again in a year. BTW I switched my phone to Google Fi. $20 a month for one line and $15 for each additional line. You will pay $10 a gig for data but it's capped at $60 for one line. I don't use much, if any, data on my phone. Had it for about 6 months now and no problems. $40 a month for two lines after tax.

Edit to add: doesn't work on all phones

I use PagePlusCellular and it's Verizon but at a much cheaper rate. It's MTM and I renew automatically. In 9 years I have had zero issues. We tried Metro POS for a short period and it was a disaster.

Thanks for this.  Just checked them online & it looks like it might be my best option.
