The Tigers must be high up on the list of "Lost no hitters/perfect games with one out to go". I'm thinking just back to the countless Verlander no-no's lost with one out left. Against LAA and CLE off the top of my head.

I'll be a little optimistic in this sea of crap, at the very least Candelario, Castellanos, and Mahtook are doing a good job showing they can be starters next year. I mean, I don't see who is going to unseat them anyway, but they're playing up to the task.

Especially Candelario, that guy rules

What the **** Nick Castellanos doing out there in the 9th of a no-hitter?

First question I had. Too bad Brad didn't get tossed. Geno wouldn't have had a 3rd baseman in RF during a no-hitter. Especially during a blow out.

No one was catching that ball. Just stop.

If a real outfielder was playing where Nick was, I would agree. But that first step, with his lack of speed, ensured Nick wouldn't get to it. If Romine plays a half step to be his right and gets the proper break on the ball? He may have had it, we'll never know. But the point is that in a 13-0 game, in the 9th inning, with a no hitter going? You don't want a 3rd baseman out in RF. Use your best possible defense.

I know JV lost one to Pit with 2 outs and few other (2 or 3) in the 8th.

Yep! He would have automatically made the HOF if he had gotten 3 no-hitters. Granted, he still can.

George Vukovich broke up several of them against the Tiger's.

I believe Walt Terrell, Milt Wilcox and Armando Galarraga all lost perfect games on the potential last pitch.

Jeff Weaver lost a no-hitter late as did several others.

He did. Josh Harrison got a 2 out hit.

Thanks Moonlight!

I guess the others I remember were broken up in the 8th and Terrell's was obviously not a perfect game.

It was two out. The game was on TV. I think the next batter grounded out to Rick Leach.

No, I meant the JV game against Pittsburgh.

I remember the Wilcox game like it was yesterday. Go to the 5:00 mark to wince again. Funny, never noticed before that the next thing Harwell said was "shades of Tommy Bridges".

Let's not forget Brad played 18 years, he was substituting a guy for defense to mess with the Baseball gods/superstition/mojo

Thanks for posting that LordStanley!

I was watching George and Al so I haven't heard that very often.

I didn't realize that was Hairston's first hit of the season! Sheez!

Didn't Hairston's kid also break up a no hitter attempt by one of the Tigers?

 I never knew this. 3 generations of baseball players;

Jerry Wayne Hairston Jr. (born May 29, 1976)

He is the grandson of former major leaguer Sam Hairston, the son of former major leaguer Jerry Hairston Sr., and the brother of Scott Hairston.

I think it's safe to say that Candelario as the every day 3rd baseman for 2018 might be written in ink now.

Safe guess.

I was watching George and Al and I think George too called it as "BASE hit", simple two word exclamation.

The Wilcox game was a Friday night. I was 16. Home watching it by myself. As I was for the Eddie Murray missed FG on New Year's Eve a few months later. See, I should have worked harder at developing a social life, would have saved me some pain.

missed the 2nd half of the game on the golf course, man that sucks!

a bit surprised nick was in the game, but he did everything right it looked like. a bit more to the right he might have been able to use his height to get a glove on it.

Great clip. Always nice to hear Harwell's voice.  Not only did Harwell drop the Bridges anecdote, he knew who broke up Bridges perfect game--which had been 50 years earlier. Maybe someone fed him the info, but I'll bet he knew it off the top of his head.

Verlander with the majors' 2nd best start of the day. 7 IP, 1 R, 3H, 10 Ks, 1 BB, winning pitcher as Astros clinch division.
