Who is the Drizzle?

Justin Verlander Traded to Astros

Recommended Posts

All the talk about Verlander having such a bad contract, but paying fair market value for a top 10 pitcher for only two seasons is actually a great contract with very little downside.

good.  I hope this somehow backfires on the Cubs and Dodgers, who really should have traded for him.

JD and JUp and JV are tearing things up with their new teams, and all I can say is 'well, duh."

baseball went full prospect / anti-salary mode the past year or two and it's kind of hilarious how every team has fallen in line with that. so much so that hardly anybody wanted to trade for no-doubt all-stars.

cubs at least tried, but they pulled the trigger too early with quintana. he is going to be fine, but he is no JV.

Yeah, I said when the Cubs traded for Quintana that they paid too much for the cost savings when they are a team that doesn't have to worry so much about $/war. They probably could have given up less to get Verlander and had the better player, with the only cost being more money that they have to pay for the better pitcher.

Maybe it will work out.

Yeah, the Cubs were dumb.

JV is a top 10 pitcher whose being paid like one. The only difference is he isn't locked in to a 6+ year contract like you'd have to pay to sign somebody of his caliber, so there is little risk associated with his contract.

I'm very happy for JV. As much as I hated to see him go, he did the right thing for himself and the Tigers. It's just a bummer this team was built so horribly that we had to trade away so many very good players.

Look at it this way, though. It was built well enough in 2010 that we were able to keep Verlander up to this point.

The Detroit Tigers should have attached Michael Fulmer with players like JD and Verlander, who were overrated trash, in order to get rid of their salaries. - Buster Olney

Verlander may be looking at another top 5 Cy season.  I'd put him behind Kluber, Sale and Severino but I don't know if I'd put anybody else ahead of him.  Considering where he was at 2 months ago that is quite an achievement, and looking back on his season he really was pretty damn dominant outside of those 3 blow up starts against Cleveland.

Law had him 4th on his list today, behind the guys you mention.

His control was way off early in the year. I believe he had BB/9 of close to 5. Imagine if he had been Verlander for the whole year. And Cabrera had been Cabrera for the whole year.

Here's a thought experiment: When they traded JD, the Tigers were 43-49 and 5 back of Cleveland. The previous 2 seasons Cabrera had a WAR of 5. This year he is -.08. So in a little over a half season a typical Cabrera should have been worth 2.5-3.0 WAR (instead of the roughly 1 WAR he had at that point). Then let's imagine Verlander had been himself all year. If so, he likely would have added at least one more win by July 18. That would have meant 46 or 47 wins, which would have put the Tigers only 1-2 games behind the Indians. Would Avila have traded JD under these circumstances? I doubt it. They probably don't make any trades and would have stayed in the race until Fulmer's injury. Depending on your perspective Cabrera's awful season and Verlander's slow start were a blessing in disguise, because it forced Avila to initiate a long overdue reset, or it was a huge tragedy, because, well, it led to this September. Of course you could apply this little exercise to any number of under performers (Victor, Norris, Zimmerman and so on). But they were more wildcards. No one expected this precipitous decline from Cabrera or Verlander's 3-month struggle. Seems as though the timing of this current course can be tied directly to our two future Hall of Famers' stumbles in 2017.

Watching this game is really stirring mixed emotions.  I wanted JV to be a Tiger for life so badly.....

i'm 100% astros. jv is in a better place for the next 2 seasons.

he's not sharp today, but doing a good job of limiting damage. he's just so hard to square up.

on pace for a classic jv 8 innings, but probably 7 with the astros actually having a bullpen.

JD Martinez was really undervalued at the deadline. I think amazing hitters who are bad at everything else have become the new undervalued asset in MLB. For years, they were overrated but now I think it is the reverse.

They picked Quintana over him, if they offered that same package for Verlander I'm sure the Tigers would have said yes.

Guessing he meant by August deadline. JV was not looking as good when Cubs made the Quintana deal. Easy to forget his slow start and how national writers were writing him off even in mid-July.
