I doubt that Avila capitalizes on his 2017 season.  He's approaching the flip side for catchers (age 31-32 is typically when catchers take a tumble offensively) and Avila already hasn't been much of a hitter for a long time other than a nice 1st half in 2017.

I'd like to have Avila back just because he's a good catcher and probably will be OK with the bat.  That's a decent commodity for any team, but I would be surprised if he secured more than 1 or 2 year deal for more than $2-3M/year.

Pretty much this.

I can see a club with a young C that is ready for more than a platoon role signing Avila as a backup/mentor C.  Or as a backup on a team that's ready now.  Those are probably the roles best suited for him now.  I can't imagine him being a starter anymore.

Also I don't see the Tigers winning 70 games next year.  They'll be terrible,  and that is part of the plan.

They could easily lose 100+ games, yes.  But if they have resurgences from some of their slumping guys (Miggy, Zimm, Norris) and/or emergence from Boyd, Candy, Jiminez, and so on, any three of these six potential positive outcomes could be worth 5-10 wins beyond the baseline.

I could see something like this.  All things being equal, the Tigers are looking like a 65-70 win team, possibly approaching 75 wins if Cabrera, Zimm, and/or Norris come back and do at least OK.

You're undervaluing the Bosio effect.

If they sign Avila, has a team ever traded a player at the deadline two years in a row?

My immediate thought is I would think any number of good teams could use Alex Avila as a back-up catcher, but haven't looked at rosters so maybe there aren't better options for him out there.

Is that where the pitch looks slower when it is coming in than when it is passing you by?

Not sure, but I would guess that if they did sign him, we won’t see the tigers achieve that feat.

Prediction, we have the #1 farm system by the end of the 2018 season.

Not even close to San Diego and they're extremely young.

I think your close to it, but Gerber won't make the team.  I think Al Avila wants to be careful that all the prospects are not rushed (based on experience, not age).  I don't see Derek Norris making the team, so I think the position players are set.  VMart should be the DH, and Hicks should be the backup catcher.  I think they'll keep Reyes and Ronny Rodriguez will backup in the infield.

I think Gerber will earn it in Spring Trainging.   Ronny too.     If he doesn't, they might bring back Alex Presley - he hasn't signed anywhere yet, has he?

Gerber won't be a backup yet.  He'll play every day in Toledo.  There isn't any room for Presley right now.

Sub Adducci for Gerber and that's a wild card team if a few things work out.

Miggy returns to 2013 form.  Zimmerman joins him.

Fulmer recovers from surgery and pitches well.

Boyd and Norris match Fulmer.

Fiers pitches 150 innings of 3.95ERA.

Machado/Candelario  both slash around .300/.350/.500

Reyes decides he can do that too.

Castellanos matches 2017

Folks, here is your 2018 Tigers calendar.  Your team has hit rock bottom when Andrew Romine gets his own month and you’re in denial that you traded away JV.

Aducci will be up when there is an injury, imo.

I think we will see the dead cat bounce, but the dead cat bounce will not be from our ending record last year. It will be from the last third of the season, and so we may not recognize it as a bounce at all - meaning, the team will outperform the last third of the season and finish about where they finished last year. I'm now going with 63-99 - totally scientific -  if no one else is traded.

However, if Fulmer and Nick are traded, it's not going to be pretty.

Let's not kid ourselves, it's not going to be pretty anyway.

Look for lots of minor league updates creeping their way onto the MLB telecast, heh.

HaHa. Detroit/Houston - what's 1500 miles between friends?

Of course when the recession hit MI in the 80's, so many Michiganders migrated to the Houston area that Texans even gave them a nickname - "Black Taggers", after all the Mi license plates on the road (which happened to be black). Maybe that makes Detroit and Houston sister cities?  xD

Wow, that’s awfully ridiculous.  They’d’of been better off going with all time legends (which, OK, Verlander probably could be on one of those months anyway).  Or just 12 month so of Paws posing in lingerie.
