JD Traded to Arizona

They are not random.  They are part of the rebuild. I tried to give an update on all the pieces that we had.  I watched the Tigers win it all in 68 at age of 6.  I played for 20 years.  That's a cheap shot.

Ah, the other end of the spectrum then.

Which is the case for most MiLB players.   To seemingly demand that all pieces in all trades work out is purely silly.   There's a possibility that a high percentage of last year's haul make it to MLB, that would be pretty good.

Candelario

Perez

Cameron

Will 2 of these - Alcantara,  Rogers, Rodriguez, Hernandez, Long or Paredes.- make it to MLB?

If so, I think Avila did well.

I'd bet on 4-5 of those making it, how well they will do only God and Microline know.

Honestly if they get a solid #3 starter in Perez, and a couple of decent position players Avila will have done well considering none of the prospects acquired were thought of as impact guys. And teams weren't offering impact guys it seems.

Where Avila deserves criticism is for waiting too long to begin the rebuild. He trades JV at the beginning of last year and maybe he gets an impact prospect. If he trades Fulmer a year ago this time maybe he gets on or two. Only Perez was considered a top 100 guy.

It's easy to do, I know... I'm an accountant.

Ha!  I'm a chemist so I agree.  I need data.  I need to see the scouting report on this guy.  But thanks.

People are missing the biggest motivation for trading Kinsler.  It allowed the Tigers to save $11 million, money that was used to get Mike Fiers, Francisco Liriano and Leonys Martin.  Chris Ilitch has a tighter budget than his daddy and the Tigers needed to make room in the budget for these FA signings.  It's no coincidence that these three signings almost exactly equal Kinsler's $11 million.

And the tighter budget right now makes sense.   The true tell will be when an extra $20M is needed to make the team more competitive.

Yes, so what do we do with it?  Should we lock up Nick?  Even in RF he is still a defensive liability but I think we can live with him there rather than 3rd.  He sure hits a ton and I can't look forward to every time he steps into the batter's box.  You guys are really going to hate me if we trade him for for a package comprised  of Steve Lombardozi, Lugo's cousin, and another Montgomery.

And yes, Bobrob, I mentioned that Ian came with a 12MM$ price tag.  I should of listed how much money we saved by each Tiger trade/progress report I listed.

No one is missing that. Although I disagree that it was the biggest motivation.

I think the general consensus is to trade Nick for value, otherwise hold him.   It's not a JD situation where he's leaving anyway.

I think money was the only motivation.  Machado is just pathetic.  As bad as Kinsler has been this year, he's miles ahead of Machado.

But the Tigers didn't want to win this year, so it's irrelevant.

Tigers have already looked at 4 different guys at 2b, we may see more before the season is out. That's what this year is about.

The flip side to that is there really wasn't much demand for those players, which never made a lot of sense either.

I think it just was a really strange market at the time.

I get it, I'm not sure that much more could have been returned.  Just hate to see fans supporting trades of great players for Cameron, Lugo, Alacantra and TINSTAAPP.  Nothing against Cam but still.

We got a lot of warm bodies.  We draft about 40 warm bodies a year.  That's why I would of just assumed watch JD hit those 29 dingers as a Tiger.  We could have witnessed him do something truly special which was to tie for the third highest single season HR total in Tiger's history.

But nobody knew that JD would hit 29 home runs in  a little over two months at the time of the trade.  If JD just merely performed at his usually .900 or so OPS mark would that change your opinion?   Sure he would've still been great but there would be nothing historic about it.

Same with JV,  even though he was performing well before the trade nobody could've foresee that he would go all prime Koufax the rest of last season and the first half of this one.   If he merely performed at a mid 3s ERA pitcher like he had been for most of the previous 5 years people wouldn't be so hard on the trade.  That and the fact that JV has been a Tiger for life which makes it tougher, but management can't think like that, they have to do what they feel is best for the team regardless of sentimental value.

Yep Randy.  And maybe the trade gave both players new life?  The chemistry was going south here anyway.  It is hard to imagine that anyone could excel in this environment like those two did once they were cut loose.

We agree there, I struggle to excel in this environment, it's mostly Shelton's fault along with Bigglesworth.   If MTSG could work a trade out for them I'd do better I think.
