2017 Trade Deadline Thread

And why should it bother JV - in the end he has the last word on whatever happens so it's all cheap talk till he agrees to put his name on the bottom line.

Thinking on it some, In the end, I think Houston trades for Gray. Oakland seems to be more willing to accept what they feel is acceptable surplus value as opposed to inflating the market.

Unless another team really drives up the market for Gray, I think that's where he ends up.

Adduci should hit #2.

He probably does once in a while to spice things up.

I am sure he has had the conversation with Verlander already and some might suggest being open about it shows the player more respect than letting speculation run rampant.

How the conversation may have started.

"Hey JV, you know that beautiful house you bought with your beautiful fiance in Beverly Hills?  How would you feel about moving out there full-time?"

Long pause.

And how the conversation never continued.

"I'll have to get back to you on that one, Big A.  Gotta run it by Kate first to see if she would rather move to Houston where there is a smaller market for pin-up girls who want to star in movies, more humidity and a vastly inferior social scene."

Heyman siren:

Quote
  • The Tigers’ take for J.D. Martinez was widely panned on the internet. But it’s a matter of supply and demand, and the demand is at an all-time low for hitters this summer, even really good ones. We may be alone here but we think they did fine getting third baseman/shortstop Dawel Lugo and two others from the D-backs.
  • There wasn’t a big market for Martinez. The Dodgers and Rockies were the other two teams in, and the Dodgers are fine with new star Chris Taylor in left field, Alex Verdugo on the horizon (not to mention the possibility Adrian Gonzalez could be back, which would send MVP candidate Cody Bellinger back out to the outfield).
  • Justin Wilson will, though, draw a decent-sized package. While the Rays have been mentioned, other teams seem more likely at the moment. The Dodgers and the Nats also have been mentioned.
  • The Cubs so far have been the only team linked publicly to Alex Avila, the son of the GM who’s having an excellent year.
  • Jose Iglesias hasn’t been mentioned much, but like the rest, he’s available.

Fenech:

On Justin Verlander: The Brewers are interested, I'm told, and the Cubs are said to be still monitoring the situation.

Morosi did mention this morning that he heard that a big factor in the Dodgers not pursing JD further was they were worried specifically about his foot issue from spring training.

If I am Verlander, I'd love to go to Houston. They are a great team where he can provide much needed veteran leadership. They will also probably be pretty damn good the rest of his career. If the Tigers are willing to eat some of his salary, Houston is loaded with good prospects which I would love to get. Getting Paulino back in the Tigers system would probably be doable, Whitley is another player I really like, Tucker might be a pipe dream but I think he has a very good chance of being an excellent OF.

More Fenech:

About the Astros: While interested, their involvement in Verlander talks has been minimal, I'm told.

Am I the only one hoping for a trade so I can criticize the trade?

What if McCann gets traded?

I think it had more to do with his propensity to get hit in the hand during the first AB with his new team.

I doubt he gets traded, but I'd love to figure out how to make a 3-team deal that nets us Mejia.  I doubt we would trade with them directly, but could be the old Jeff Weaver to the Yankees situation from a long time ago.

I'm really looking forward to it. Maybe Alex Avila traded straight up to get Mike Pelfrey back. Really get me posting.

I heard that the other teams in on JD were Cleveland, LAD, and CO, but that LAD and CO lowballed.

I wouldn't be so sure.

Moving JV clears $100 to $150 million off the payroll this offseason alone. Even if they give $30 to keep the own guys. They would still have $40 million to spend and still save $30-$80 million. I wouldn't be so sure they wouldn't spend.

I'm also not sure they would occupy last for the forseeable future. They theoretically would get some decent pieces back so then you have a core of Fulmer/Miggy/Nick C/Astros Pitcher 1/Someone like Astros Tucker. Then you have our own guys and some money to spend to add to that core -- someone like a JD or whatever. They could turn it around fairly quickly though next year is probably lost no matter what.

They were in a cost saving mode so much that they traded their CF with no replacement. Moving JV just hastens a rebuild. It saves money on a team not expected to win for a few years. If you think they'll go out and sign some expensive, older players, you're mistaken. In a rebuild mode, you unload ALL of your expensive players and only keep the ones with little value, compared to their salary. It's the price we have to pay for a nice 10 year run. It sure would have been nice to win a championship or two during those years. Oh well......

Not gonna lie, the thought of never seeing JV pitch for the Tigers is upsetting to me.

If I knew trading him would lead to a brighter future for the Tigers than it would be a little easier for me but I'm not so sure that's gonna be the case.

Not with the guy who signed Lowe, Pelfrey, Aviles and Zimmermann making the trade. Teams are lining up to fleece us. Fire Avila and have him take his Ausmus with him.  ?

Nightengale:

The #Tigers next trade chip to fall will be catcher Alex Avila, and no team has expressed stronger interest than the #Cubs . It's perfect fit

I'm sorry, but that doesn't make sense. You think Colorado's GM is happy that ARI fleeced him?

HEY OUR RIVALS ARE AFTER JD AND JWIL, LET'S OFFER DETROIT CRAP THAT'LL SHOW 'EM
