If it is about British detectives......I'm sure she has.

I'll ask her tonight.

EDIT: Scratch that. I just texted her. She says she knows about it but that isn't her thing. She likes the darker detective shows. This is a comedy, apparently?

Only vaguely - it's a slow one; not slapstick or anything like that. About metal detectorists.

Much of it's filmed round here. I really enjoyed it - it's one that new jokes stand out every time I watch it. Has Toby Jones in if that helps her.

They sure do. My wife is such a fan of Britain's TV shows and actors that I had to get that streaming service (Acorn) that just shows British stuff. She swears their TV is the bestest TV!

I then have to remind her of Breaking Bad, Mad Men etc.

She should check out Brit Box! https://www.britbox.com/ Recently launched and has a lot of good stuff.  Full disclosure, I work for the BBC haha.

Well, if this promo doesn't excite you, you may be dead.

I guess some people are saying you can see the reflection of the Wall in the white walker's eye at the end... Not sure what the meaning of that would be, other than the wall is likely coming down at some point.  I'd guess the end of the season.

I think I'm going cold turkey on the internet for this season of Game of Thrones to see if it increases my enjoyment.  I used to absorb every teaser, trailer, read every forum/article I could find on theories and clues in stuff... I'm not sure if it has increased my enjoyment of shows or made me kind of cynical in a weird way (when things don't turn out how I am thinking, etc.)...I have a feeling I won't be able to keep this up though.

I have glossed over various reactions to the trailer while trying to skip substantive talk and am glad things sound positive!

I typically do not scour the internet for ideas etc, but usually after I watch an episode I will read one review of it after I have already formed an opinion to see if I missed something and to just refresh my memory of the episode.

I have had an unhealthy obsession with pouring over reddit threads after watching episodes haha, I started having dreams about the shows after reading before bed and realized that I probably shouldn't be this hardcore about it.

I am now of the belief that Martin will never finish writing the books. I would out the chances at roughly 25%. I am not even sure if he will ever finish writing winds of winter.

Ultimately, I think the success of the show is going to end up hurting the bottom line for the books that are yet to come out, if they ever come out at all. People only have so much time. It has been a very interesting story, but the show is going to spoil the books, so the incentive to put up with the meandering pace of the books to find out what happens is lessened.

Once the story is told, I think a lot of fans are going to check out.

I am trying to remember when the show premiered. I guess it was about 6 years ago. Dance with dragons had not yet been released.

He knew at the time that he would have about 8 years to finish the series, and six years later he still hasn't put out the next book.

Such an odd situation.

According to the internet, he's worth around 15 million these days, probably about 15 million more than he had before the show, so that particular incentive no longer exists. I would imagine that would have something to do with it.

Well, he has definitely benefitted from the show. No doubt about that.

That said, when the rights to the show were sold, it wasn't the hit that it is today. Hard to say how much he actually makes based on the success of the show, or whether he was mostly paid up front for the rights.

The books were successful, of course. I'm guessing they were particularly successful if HBO is interested in making a tv show. I think most authors are paid to write the book for the publisher, but get little on the back end. A great seller helps on the next book deal.

I wouldn't be surprised if his wealth is still mostly based on the book deals. But I'm just guessing here.

but once you get to a certain point, the incentive to finish your current book in order to start on a new one is definitely decreased.

I wonder if he made an outline of where he wants the story to go? In case he croaks before the series is finished.

Robert Jordan did that. His series was taken over by Brian Sanderson.

He met with the showrunners a couple years ago and outlined it for them.

Yeah, he's apparently making a ton off the books. I have to imagine a huge majority of that is due to the popularity of the show, but he probably did ok before the show as well.

I doubt any new asoiaf full fledged book will ever be released written by GRRM.  We may get a few prequel type stories in collections like he has been doing or someone else will finish it up for him (like the Sanderson scenario mentioned), but I've given up on Martin actually finishing another book.  The timeline changes for drafts, what he's said about where he is, and every other news regarding Winds just screams that he isn't even close for this one.

The internet joke about whether he has any pages is somewhat entertaining, I must say. The only reason I lean toward winds of winter being finished is that he was probably paid quite a bit up front to do so.

Ya I think the no pages thing is funny, but I'm doubting it is completely blank (I'm guessing all the released chapters were previously written for the already released books that got bumped?) but it doesn't seem like he's close to figuring out whatever he needs to with all the convoluted plots to get an actual book out.

I'd love to see his book deal contract in regards to kill fees or fees due to not being able to complete the book himself.  I wonder if he's made so much money at this point that the fees don't even matter to him.

Yeah, from what has been released, it sounds like the stuff that was already written. It's been six years, though! That's insane. You can't fault a guy for taking a bit of a break after dance with dragons was finally released and the tv show was becoming a huge hit.

There just doesn't seem to be any reason for him to have not finished or come close by now if he was actively working to finish it.

Oh well. At this point I don't really care if he ever releases any more books. The tv show has been so good, it is a perfectly fine vehicle for telling the story.

Martin isn't motivated to finish Winds of Winter, and I seriously doubt we will see it until after his death, after which someone will finish it aka The Silmarillion.

I think Winds of Winter is mostly done at this point, from the rumors and bits that I have gleemed. That said, he is still probably working on it, then it needs to go to the editors, printers, etc.  Best case you are looking at a release foe x-mas 2017.  But could be a Q1 2018 release.

For certain, however, it won't come earlier than that, because he won't want it competing with the show in July-August.

Well, it's a legacy of sorts.  I don't know if that means much to GRRM or not, but he is the author behind one of the top selling book series and tv shows of this decade.

And he's still taking on new projects, so he clearly wants to keep working, not sit back and do nothing with his money.  I feel like that's a bit of an indicator, if his health is permitting.
