PELFREY RELEASED !

It would not surprise me to see Pelfrey have a decent season for some ballclub.  He might not be able to join a MLB team out of the gate and might need to throw in AAA until an opportunity opens though.  If we weren't able to trade him while offering to pay his entire salary, then it seems doubtful that a MLB will open for him now that he's a FA.

I mean there's a lot to like about Pelfrey. He throws a very hittable fastball and has no effective secondary pitches.

The philosophy of putting the best 25 players on the roster seems popular in theory, but rarely put in practice where where large contracts are concerned.  Bravo, Tigers.

Sanchez must feel like he dodged a bullet.

Every outfielder who isn't Upton or Martinez sucks big time and let's not forget the potential disasters in the bullpen!

EDIT: The censored word makes it look worse than it was intended. I'm sure Bigg's parents were married when he was born. o.O

If pelfrey doesn't find a major league deal, I wonder whether he would consider returning to the Tigers. My guess is no. It's probably better for him to take a minor league deal with a team that has a rotation that is more in flux so that his chances of making it back are higher. I imagine he would be no better than the 8th starter for the Tigers, behind Sanchez and Farmer.

He seems like a perfect Ray Searage project over in Pittsburgh. Although Hutchison has not worked out yet...

I think the issue with the Tigers is much more likely that our Toledo rotation is probably full. I currently have: Farmer, VerHagen, Saupold, Bell, Jaye, and Turley.  That's six by my count, but of course VerHagen Saupold and Bell could all just as easy pitch from the bullpen. Or we could always bump a guy back a level if need be, because it wouldn't be for a full season most likely.  Veterans like Pelfrey always get opt outs by the end of May or sometime in June.

I guess it just depends on his options and what the Tigers want to offer him in terms of opportunities to get back to the majors. But personally I'd like to get Pelfrey back in the organization, as I trust him to keep us in games more than the younger guys, in the event that we need a SP from Toledo.

I think they could find a spot, but who knows. But there are probably better situations for him. But I always wonder whether a guy feels some loyalty to the team that gave him the contract.

If reports are correct, and I would guess they are because this is just how the Tigers are, they tried to find him a place to play picking up his whole contract and still found no takers. If Pelf wants to pitch this year it sounds like he is  going to have to accept a minor league assignment and prove his way back.

Yep.  Short of a last minute injury, it's very difficult seeing a ballclub offering a major league roster spot at the moment.  But he's still throwing 92-93, and you have to think some club will need the help this season, if he can stomach a stint in AAA.  You never know with 33 year olds who have made $46+ million in the game, if they are satisfied and want to walk away, or give it another shot.

I don't have a problem with Lowe, he was coming off a great season in 2015.

Pelfrey was just a mystery.       He is very well-liked by fellow players and the staff.    I don't know, his arm has some juice, but the ball just flattens out, no late movement.

I can see it now, the Indians will pick him up out of desperation in the middle of the season and he will throw atleast one gem against us in a crucial game down the stretch.

Can we talk about why MCS puts a space before his exclamation points and like 8 spaces between sentences?

He also doesn't have the art of pitching.

He could have used the yellow hammer.

In the greater order of things we don't have to feel bad about Pelfrey.  It's not like he's that marginal player in "Moneyball" that Billy Beane cut a couple service days short of getting a major-league pension.  The man has done quite well for himself in this profession. Like Lou Brock once said, in the end the game humbles everyone.

As a general rule I think that signing aging pitchers with a limited track record of success and poor peripherals is really stupid

Releasing them is cool and good though
