Reports indicate Red Wings taking bizarre stance with trade calls

http://www.wingingitinmotown.com/2017/2/22/14695858/nhl-trade-rumors-reports-indicate-red-wings-general-manager-ken-holland-bizarre-stance-trade-calls

Apparently Kenny wants to re-sign Smith to an extension instead of taking on of the many trade offers. Which, doesn't make much sense given they have a bunch of comparable defenseman.

It makes perfects sense in Kenny's mind because the guy is a complete dolt. This guy is putting himself in the running for worst GM of the major four sports. What on Earth (or any of the 7 newly discovered planets) would possess you to hang onto Brandon Smith? We aren't going to be a winning franchise anytime soon, so no reason not to trade him and get draft picks.

Who is Brandon Smith? Is he a better player than Brendan Smith?

Here's what Mark Easson of MyNHLTradeRumors has to say about the Wings:

Thomas Vanek should interest multiple teams at the deadline, the Wings will likely wait until close to the deadline in hope of getting the highest return. Guessing they would get a second round pick or maybe a third and fourth round pick or a prospect.

Vanek won’t re-sign with them in the offseason. He’ll want a multi-year deal and a big raise. The Wings won’t have a lot of salary cap space.

Drew Miller likes how he has integrated himself with the Grand Rapids Griffins, but, no offense, the veteran hopes his time with the team is short.

With the NHL trade deadline looming March 1, the former Detroit Red Wings forward wants a trade and a fresh opportunity elsewhere.

The top candidates to be traded are impending unrestricted free agents Thomas Vanek, Steve Ott and Brendan Smith. Defenseman Mike Green is another possibility although the final year of his contract, which is worth $6 million, could scare away potential suitors.

The guy that auto-correct thinks plays defense for the Red Wings.

Red Wings deal Jurco to Blackhawks for 3rd-round pick

http://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/nhl/red-wings/2017/02/24/red-wings-trade-f-tomas-jurco-blackhawks-3rd-round-pick/98370124/

I think Jurco could be decent as a bottom 6 fwd in a different system/on a decent team. But it also seems like fair value for the Wings.

Agreed third round pick is market value. Unfortunately, the Red Wings have plenty of bottom 6 forwards, the Griffins have a lot of those type players coming up the pipe. Redwings need to get top 6 forwards and top 4 D-men. Best way to do that is probably through the draft, so I am all for collecting picks.

They weren't using him anyway, at least they got SOMETHING for him.

Patrick Eaves was traded by Dallas to Anaheim for a conditional 2nd (becomes 1st if Anaheim makes the conference final). Market for Vanek has to be a straight-up 1st rounder.

Not buying Vanek is worth a first. Don't see any team giving that up.

I think that is unlikely. A 2nd is what I suspect Kenny will get.

Then a 2nd plus either a 4th or a prospect.

I would like to see the Leafs pick up Vanek,.  But on HNIC last night they were saying the Leafs were interested in Sheehan and Smith, not exactly game changers.

Sheahan would do well under Babcock in Toronto - but not for a 1st, ha, that's insane. Smith not so much. I'm not sure you really need Vanek either.

If Sheahan is worth a 1st, I am worth a 4th or 5th.  RH 'shot' from the blue line to boot.

Bleacher speculates:

The Los Angeles Kings, meanwhile, lack scoring punch at left wing and could use an experienced forward such as Vanek. Their production drops beyond Tanner Pearson and his 34 points. The Wings need to improve their blue-line depth and rebuild for the future. A defensive prospect and a second-round pick could be the asking price.

NHL rumors reports

Quote

Team that have shown interest in Vanek include the Anaheim Ducks, Ottawa Senators, Chicago Blackhawks, Florida Panthers and Los Angeles Kings. It’s not known what the Red Wings are looking for, for Vanek, but it likely starts with a first round pick, or a second round pick and a prospect.

The Red Wings will protect Danny DeKeyser and Mike Green for the expansion draft. The third could depend on whether they re-sign Brendan Smith. If they are able to re-sign him in the $3.5 to $3.75 million range, they will protect him.

Mr. Bigglesworth to Torontosports.com for the Leafs 5th round pick, a case of (AMERICAN) beer, and 3 left hand hockey sticks.
