As a courtesy I think anytime the spoiler tag is used a brief warning that describes what kind it is....

I'm just making these up:

Good spoiler:

Maybe Yoda is in the picture as he could have been advising Luke all this time just as Obi Wan did, and as we heard in Sith, he'd be communicated with Qui Gon while on Tattooine.

Bad spoiler:

Billy Dee Williams was spotted on the set for a few days.  There's grainy pictures

How did you know about both of those?

Boy, if you guys are going to act like such pussies about spoilers, you really shouldn't look at this then:

Spoiler

Ha! You looked! Hypocrite!

Or you should probably just assume that if I'm posting it, it's going to be seriously spoilerish. Like this:

Spoiler

You really do not want to read this.

Spoiler

I'm warning you.

Spoiler

Not going to post it.

Spoiler

If you really want to know, PM me.

Did you know that the trench we see in A New Hope where the final battle takes place is not the "equatorial" trench that runs east/west through the middle of the death star? It actually runs north and south and is much, much smaller. I remember noticing the size difference when I was a kid but thought it was just a continuity error. This article points out that it's actually pretty obvious that the two are not the same.

I guess I always assumed it was the "equatorial" trench... interesting.

On another trench note, it always looked to me that the hole was on the floor of the tench.  Luke's missile shots appear to go down and into the hole.  If that's the case, why did they fly along the trench rather than approach the hole directly?  It seems to me that a direct approach to the hole would be easier and mean the missiles wouldn't need to make a radical 90-degree change in trajectory right after being fired.

I always assumed the DS rotated for gravity purposes and staying close kept you in the gravity pull making the approach much easier than if you were trying to hit the small hole dive bombing at a small moving target time after time.  I think it also had to do with keeping as much fire off them as possible as the gunners would not fire as much for fear of damaging the shell.

I just assumed they didn't know exactly where the port was located, so they flew along the trench until their nav computers told them they reached it. I'm not sure if the nav computers worked like GPS or if they had a way of detecting the port. The keeping fire off them point makes sense too.

The gravity idea doesn't work because it doesn't appear that gravity is inertia based based on things like the shuttle/craft docks and where the gunner people are standing when the guns fire.  It definitely appears that gravity is being generated in a top to bottom sort of way rather that via rotation. Also artificial gravity via rotation wouldn't work great as unless you were in the outside equatorial ring area...  Moving inward or towards the poles would reduce the effectiveness of rotation gravity.

I suppose it could just be a product of when the movie was made too.  In the 70's the idea of a computer being able to calculate where a small port would likely be x-minutes before you got there probably seemed like fantasy, so the idea of following the trench until the end like you're suggested above makes more sense with 1970s tech.

I remember re-watching the first Star Trek episode with Romulans a while back.  Originally the cloaking device merely rendered the ship invisible to human eyes, but it still could be completely tracking with other ship sensors.  One of the crewman (Sulu maybe?) suggested using the ships sensor equipment to target and fire on the ship commenting that it would be far less accurate than visually aiming the phasers, but might work.

Obviously we now laugh at that idea that weapons on a space ship would be more accurate if a person was visually aiming them vs. a computer, but in the 60s that probably seemed logically right.  So it's isn't too much of a stretch to think it would be hard to envision a computer system capable of calculating the proper trajectory for a head on assault aiming at a specific point with both objections in motion.

I like it. She's maybe not as cute as when her hair is pulled back, but she looks a little more serious/grown up.

Not a huge fan of Rey's look.

She looks sorta like an elf from LotR there!

Circling back on an earlier discussion, the Spanish translation of the title has been revealed and it is something like los ultimos jedi, which refers to more than one jedi.

So the. Big Star Wars convention thing is happening this week. Obviously the first trailer will be out this week then. I'm a bit surprised it took them this long since the movie is 8 months away, but it's understandable because rogue one was still at the forefront of their marketing efforts.

The panel at the convention starts at 11 and goes for 90 minutes I think.

I wonder if they will save it for the end, or if they will show it early so they can talk a bit about what is in it.

For the force awakens, we already had the first trailer and they talked about jakku and other things that were apparent from the trailer, but at this point we know most of the characters so it's not like we need an introduction to them.
