Jar Jar is the James McCann of the Star Wars universe.

That is pretty harsh criticism of Jar Jar, and there was no death cruel enough for Jar Jar.

can't wait to read the analysis... I was tired, and a little drunk, when I watched last night.  Had the day off and was drinking all day watching baseball.

I think BB8 adds enough "cute factor". Do they really need the owl thing too? That has been my one constant criticism of the SW movie franchise is they seem to think they always need to add something cute. I think Rogue One was the only one that bucked that trend.

Snoke clearly knows Rey's parentage here with the "fulfill your destiny" line. Everyone thinks she's a product of Luke or Obi-Wan, but what if she has sith blood? Maybe removed a couple generations. Maybe from Duku or someone like that? It's not likely to be Anakin. I hope someone more obscure.

Could also have something to do with Del Toro's character, who we have yet to even see. He probably has a very small role, maybe in a force vision or something.

Could there be some merging or alliance between Rey/Little Vader, force/darkside? Or is that against everything Star Wars?

I’m hesitant to put too much stock into what the trailer hints at.

But going down that road, I could see Rey being a snoke creation, similar to how Palpatine created Anakin (that’s what happened right?).

maybe she got away. Maybe it was luke that rescued her and dropped her at jakku. Maybe luke’s line about not being afraid of what he saw before was a reference to her when she was younger.

Kylo’s line in TFA about “what girl” has to mean something.

I could see the scene where he offers his hand being a vision.

I’m fairly confident that this movie is going to have a downer ending, so Rey joining kylo is possible. That would be a marketing nightmare though, right?

I can see Rey joining Kylo at the end, with the final movie entailing Skywalker sacrificing himself to Kylo in order to bring Rey back.  Naturally Rey would kill Kylo as a symbolic gesture of her return to good-guy-dom.

Gotta say, I loved the trailer and I’m really looking forward to this one. I have a lot of faith in Rian hitting it out of the park. So many ways this story can go. I was really impressed with Luke’s dialogue. I think there was a lot of concern about whether he could still act, but from the limited amount we have seen, it seems to work.

I have my tickets and seats for Friday for my son and I. Can't wait! Turns out that he doesn't have basketball practice on Thursday, so we could go then, but there are no reserved seating options left and I'm not waiting in crazy lines just to see it Thursday instead of Friday.

I did not buy advanced tickets this time.  Wife's birthday and work Holiday party all going on this weekend.  Sunday morning/afternoon looks like the earliest I will be able to see this and more than likely it will be Monday night if we can find a sitter.  By the end of next week at the latest I will have watched this movie.

I do not really have any expectation for the movie.  I know it will be good.  I know the story will be solid.  It is Star Wars...it almost does not matter.

Anybody see it yet? Send me a PM if you feel like discussing it.

Saw it last night.

I have some opinions about it and have read a couple of reviews I agree with.

Spoiler

About 15 mins too long seems a reasonable opinion. The small, cute things Chewbacca was trying to eat were Mort from Madagascar weren't they?

I saw it.  Not sure what we do for spoilers.

Didn’t care for the ending  I thought it should have stopped with whatever happened with Luke   Usually at the end of the movies it’s a high note or otherwise important   This ending is what I would have expected for episode 9

but I did like it   Pace was good   Action  I also like it when I get so engrossed in a movie that what is obvious after isn’t obvious at the time

so the parentage if Rey is insignificant?

I always forget how to do the spoiler tags. I wish there was a link at the top of the reply box like for bold and italic.

Just manually add {spoiler} and {/spoiler} around your text but replace the { with ].

I think there’s another way on the web version but I am on my phjne

I need to see it again.  I was pretty lit while watching it.  I thought it was going to enhance it, but I am too old for that **** anymore and it just made everything feel unconnected.  I am still not real sure what even happened!  lol

Spoiler

Most of the casino scenes were unnecessary CGI candy.  Getting rid of that would have put the movie at a better overall length.

I saw it Friday night with my son.

I liked it, but didn't love it. I actually really liked the Rey parentage reveal. I thought that was a nice curveball after so many people thought she would end up being a Skywalker or Kenobi. I also really enjoyed Luke's arc and his "battle" with Kylo. I like Finn as a character, but his story was the epitome of pointless. His running around with Rose served no purpose other than to give him something to do. I also did not care for Phasma's demise. Yes, I see the parallel with how Boba Fett went out, but I didn't like that either! And I HATED Leia Poppins! That was so ridiculous that I could not believe it actually made it into the movie. I agree with having Leia sidelined for much of the movie, since her acting was so terrible and it left the power struggle dynamic with Poe and Laura Dern's character, but there had to be a better way to do it than that.

Overall, I put it behind Rogue One and The Force Awakens (and the originals), but still light years ahead of 1-3. It did have a more original story than TFA though, which I definitely give it credit for.

A brief thought

the casino storyline seemed pretty random/bad as I was watching it. But with the movie in the rear view, I think it works a bit better. One of the big themes in the film is the idea of a nothing person having a part in all of this. The Rose backstory and the slave kids, and the final scene of the kid, are kind of nice.

Finn and Poe don’t really have much to do in the movie, and it’s kind of hard to give them something interesting to do when the kylo and Rey and Luke stuff was the dominant storyline.
