The Presidency of Donald J. Trump

The U.S. could probably use a good humbling of some kind to help it get back on track.

We took a pretty bloody nose in SE Asia, and haven't exactly covered ourselves in glory in the ME either, but if anything those have increased the reactionary social response.

The humbling might end up being the ceding of our position as the world's main superpower. And really, that might not be a bad thing.

yeah. Thinking back on the history of 'superpowers' I think we have done it wrong. When the Brits got involved in a place, they didn't care about establishing democratic government, they cared about establishing rule of law. And in the places were they did that,  even though the locals eventually threw them out, that legacy has been more valuable to those places than all the  elected but failed governments we left behind.

They're finally losing this issue....

They were complete dicks about how they wrote up the statement, too. “Dick” being short for “vindictive”, natch.

Good points. But all superpowers eventually do it wrong, in that they all eventually failed. The Roman Empire, the Mongol Empire, the British Empire, the Soviet Empire—all of them faltered due to supreme arrogance and the illusion of infallibility, then they all fell and were supplanted by something else. Our empire will fall, too, and will probably be replaced by a virtual Chinese empire rooted in the emerging African and Asian nations. And then they’ll eventually fall, too. World keep turning, until it stops.

PHILIP ROTH ON TRUMP, PEDS AND ANALYTICS ... Several people have posted about Philip Roth’s THE GREAT AMERICAN novel in the wake of the author’s demise. But none have mentioned the novelist’s amazing clairvoyance in the closing three chapters of that satirical work ... where a 17 year old brilliant son of a Jewish team owner develops complex mathematical formulas to hike teams’ winning (analytics), where the same wunderkind invents a special formula Wheaties that turns the hapless Mundies into instant winners (Peds), and where it is predicted that America will be destroyed when the Russians hatch a plot to get one of their agents elected as a Republican presidential candidate to dismantle American democracy from with ... somehow Roth brilliantly saw the simultaneous destruction of both the USA (Trump) and MLB (Analytics) 45 years before it actually happened 1f910.png🤐

😂 You beat me to it!

.... the comments are funny too, as they point out that not only are they white, there’s plenty of Russian blood there also. 🏒 ( I wonder if the Canadians would show? 🤔)

What is interesting to me is that of all the empires that have come and gone in the world outside of China, the number that have left a lasting mark are pretty small. Rome, England, and Islam. And interestingly I would say one commonality of these three empires goes  back to being empires that established effective systems of law that transcended ethnicity or hero.

Not seen as much in the Anglo sphere but Napoleon left quite a mark in Europe

Another shoe drops

From today's NYT.

Quote

WASHINGTON — Mexico hit back at the United States on Tuesday, imposing tariffs on around $3 billion worth of American pork, steel, cheese and other goods in response to the Trump administration’s steel and aluminum levies, further straining relations between the two countries as they struggle to rewrite the North American Free Trade Agreement.

....

Mexico’s list was designed to hit at parts of the United States represented by high-profile Republicans, Mexican officials have said, including steel from Vice President Mike Pence’s home state of Indiana, motorboats from Senator Marco Rubio’s Florida, and agricultural products from the California district of Representative Kevin McCarthy, the House majority leader.

Farmers, who are among those most vulnerable to the Mexican tariffs, said the tariffs would devastate American agriculture.

“These tariffs will exact immediate and painful consequences on many American farmers,” Angela Hofmann, deputy director of Farmers for Free Trade, said in a statement. “Hog, apple, potato and dairy farmers are among those suddenly facing a 10 or 20 percent tax hike on the exports they depend of for their livelihoods. Farmers need certainty and open markets to make ends meet. Right now they are getting chaos and protectionism.”

So much winning.

There should be a 9/11 style commission to learn more about the Hurricane that hit Puerto Rico. It seems, on the surface, like a government failure in being prepared and providing adequate resources. But, its hard to know for sure. Either way, a lot of people died and storm season is approaching again.

The only way that might happen is if anti-Trumpers are elected.

I couldn't agree more.    This is the most important event that's happened in this presidency so far.

Puerto Rico ain't 'murica.

Don't worry, Trump will meet with the President of Puerto Rico just like he met with the President of the Virgin Islands.
