Colorado vs. #4 Michigan - 9/17/16

Recommended Posts

Buffalos are making a bold choice to wear uniforms that remind the Michigan players of an event that happened when they were all but glimmers in their father's eyes.

What would Mark Dantonio do in this situation?

I can't help but to flash back to 1994 with this Colorado matchup.  It is one of those days and games I will never forget.

My buddy was a senior at Albion that year and they had a bye week, so he invited me to come down for a huge party.  I left my house in Mt. Pleasant after Michigan got up early and thought the win was a done deal.  Two hours later, I walk into my buddy's room at Albion just in time to see Westbrook come down with the winning score.  The only sports experience I can compare it to is watching Tyson bite off Evander's ear a few years later.  Even Horry's corner jumper over Sheed doesn't compare (for me).

This was their DIII national championship year, so all the Britons were in high spirits--the party was sick even by Chippewa standards.  As peeved as I was about Michigan losing that game on the Stewart end zone heave, all the Spartan fans were so pumped that it made the party that much more crazy.

I don't see the Buffs coming up with this kind of miracle on Saturday.  It looks like they have a converted WR starting at CB, but their other CB is a stud.  FWIIW, the converted CB is a decathlete so there's that.  There are maybe a half-dozen four star talents on their squad, but if their coach can win at San Jose State he will do well with what he has at Colorado.

Colorado has strong specialists.  Kicker is consistent and a lefty that hit multiple 60+ yd attempts in HS--not sure if he used a block or not.  For those not familiar with the advantage a block gives a kicker, think golf--the tee insures more loft and a cleaner strike.  The punter is a coffin-corner expert with a solid leg, so Michigan could very well be starting deep in their own territory quite a bit.

The spread is 20 points, and as tempting as it is to take the over at home I just don't know.  This is a pass-heavy spread team and we don't know if Lewis is playing.  The Buffs play a 3-man front with lots of stunting.  Could be a huge day for ****, the other TE and the slot receivers.  The Buffs will not have enough depth in the secondary, nor will they be able to match up against **** and Co.  Leavitt will throw different defensive looks at Michigan, who is very familiar with what Harbaugh is going to try to do having coached under him in the past--but he just doesn't have the horses to stop the multi-faceted Michigan attack.

Michigan 34  Colorado 15

I was a kid when the "Miracle at Michigan" happened and I remember watching it with my dad. When the hail mary play happened I seem to remember him pouring another drink for himself and just walking out back in stunned silence and disgust.

Do not remember it at all. But I can certainly imagine what it felt like. I assume it was similar to the feeling after last year's MSU game.

It hurt.  It was a blip though.  The foundation of the program was still rock solid.  It wasn't like the post-Lloyd Carr years when we were losing our non-conference games

I've only refused to acknowledge a loss like I have last year's MSU game once, and that was the Game 6 of the 1988 NBA Finals . . . Zeke's 25 pt 4th quarter, ending with Laimbeer's phantom foul on Kareem.  The loss to App State was close to that.

I remember this game because I was a newlywed, getting ready to take my bride out for dinner that night.  I remember saying "Just one last play & we'll go...& then she didn't know why I was so upset & quiet."  She learned. :)

By the way, I'm in Arizona this weekend & my hotel does not have BTN.  I'm not even sure if the local B-Dubs would have it.  Anybody know where I can find a place to stream it free, or even just the online radio call?

I don't know the exact app, but there is a free app that has the radio call. It is not the wtka app.

Any bar with directv will have BTN. It should not be hard to find one.

If you have btn at your house you can use you cable/satellite login to use stream btn games on your computer or phone.

My buddy was at that game, and he said after the touchdown...it was so quiet in the big house, you could clearly hear what the Colorado players were saying to each other. It was almost like the entire stadium was holding their breath, not believing what they just saw. His family has had season tickets for around 35 years now, and he said it was scary how quiet that stadium got at that moment.

If you are in the PHX area, you will be able to find the game somewhere for sure.  For sure at BDubs.  There is a huge transplant Michigan transplant community out there and a big Wolverine fan base to go with it.

Headed into Ann Arbor for tailgating. Little rainy today.  I'm thinking Michigan covers the spread.
