Dutch Clark: The Life of an NFL Legend and the Birth of the Detroit Lions

Recommended Posts

I'm reading this book right right now:

https://www.amazon.com/Dutch-Clark-Legend-Birth-Detroit/dp/0810885204/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1470659253&sr=8-1&keywords=chris+willis+dutch+clark

So far it's pretty interesting.  I've just gotten into Clark's senior year at Colorado College so not a lot of Lions stuff yet, but there was an early chapter on the previous failed attempts to get the NFL into Detroit.

I'm really interested in the middle '30s period of Detroit Sports history so this book is right up my alley.  It's interesting to see the whole football landscape back in the early days.  I think it would be very interesting to see how football would be different if players still were expected to play both sides of the ball, or if the ball itself wasn't changed to be thrown better.

One other interesting side note: Did you know that Dutch Clark was very close to coming to Michigan for his college career?  It wasn't until the last minute that he changed his mind and instead headed to... Northwestern. Yup, Clark was actually enrolled and on campus in Northwestern but left after only a few days there because it just felt too foreign to him.

Nearly finished with the book now... just one chapter to go.  Very interesting read.  There's a lot of good information in this book about what football was like in the early days of the league.  And how big the Lions really were in the 30s.  I don't think too many Lions fans really know how good Clark was and what an impact he made on the sport.  He was regularly billed as the "Ty Cobb" of football, and while that might be a bit of hyperbole, it was only a bit.  He was considered by many of his peers as the best all around player at all aspects of the game in his day.
