7-9 here, so I would imagine 18-23rd depending on tie-breakers and such. Vegas, IIRC, has us at 7-9 also, so that would make me think that many of the talking heads believe we will fall in the under category, ESPN and Yahoo probably pushing at 7 wins.

I don't expect the nationals to rank us much higher. We don't necessarily deserve it. I'm a little more surprised the fans are so down on the roster this year.  I also understand healthy skepticism due to the fact that, as Buddha likes to point out, the Lions are the worst franchise in the 4 major sports.

I am obviously more optimistic, and think there's enough reasons to suggest a winning record.  I also won't be blown away if I end up being wrong though either, due to said history. Get this season started already!

Football Outsiders' DVOA has us 14th as well(above 13 opponents). 40% playoff odds. 13th on offense, 14th on D. Kinda goes with my thinking. A top 10 offense is probably what it takes for us to make the playoffs this year.

IDK where to mention it, but Riddick and Martin both got extended last week. Riddick got a 3/13 extension and Martin is a top 5 paid punter now. I can't imagine anyone's unhappy about either move.

Very happy about Riddick extending. I believe that a punter is easily replaced.

I read somewhere a long time ago that the Lions were known for treating their kickers right.  That's why we gone so long with relatively few changes at kicker (well, other than the kicking disaster year!).  Of course that was many years and multiple GMs and presidents plus one different owner ago, but it seems as if it's still true and I don't have any problem with it at all.

Maybe, but i think good ones have value and Martin is special IMO. He also kicks off

True, but I'll never forget this overlooked bit from the Dallas playoff game:

4th and 6 at DET 49

(8:18 - 4th) (Punt formation) S.Martin punts 10 yards to DAL 41, Center-D.Muhlbach, out of bounds

Followed by an 11 play, 59-yard, game-winning, touchdown drive by Dallas.

Not forgotten by me.  I still point to that play instead of the pass interference that was the reason we lost it.

Whenever I think of Sam Martin, I am with you guys. The Dallas garbage punt pops into my head.

Given the Lions history, you could say they treat kickers well and it hasn't gotten them anywhere.

He kicked the heck out of the ball yesterday, as he normally does, but this conclusion is pretty fair. I seem to recall one other late season, close game, with playoff implications, where he did the same thing.

He is usually SOOO good, which makes those plays even more infuriating.

Through no fault of the kickers...  You can't lay the blame for the Lions ineptitude of the last 30 years or so at Murray or Hanson or Prater's feet and more than you can at Barry Sanders' or Calvin Johnson's.

I agree, but overpaying or taking care of the kicking position can effect other positions by having less money for other positions.
