Political Pot-pourri

Recommended Posts

And now, this. Yay.

3. Online meddlers pose as local news outlets

1603099043132.png

This is an example cited by the N.Y. Times of a "seemingly run-of-the-mill news website" that actually has a political agenda.

Political actors are now trying to manipulate elections by posing as fake media operations or by manipulating real media companies into reporting and spreading disinformation, Axios' Sara Fischer writes.

  • Why it matters: Consumers already struggle to differentiate between straight news, fake news, opinion journalism and political advertising. Partisans in today's information war are deliberately blurring the lines.

A sprawling network of over 1,300 partisan local news sites that hide their backing by Republican groups and corporate P.R. firms was uncovered by the New York Times.

  • The sites have innocuous names like North Cook News, Du Page Policy Journal, Illinois Valley Times, Des Moines Sun and Ann Arbor Times.

  • Most of the sites falsely declare in their "About" pages "that they to aim 'to provide objective, data-driven information without political bias."

I would say the difference is he was immediately canned. That tends to put an end to the story. It's denial and defense and 'whatabout''ism that makes for the reaction. Sort of like in the Franken case, it's hard to accuse people of double standards when a standard is actually enforced.

Yeah, meh. I barely know who Toobin is or why he's important to anybody.

This can go here because it extends beyond Trump.... very important thread about the kind of thinking that creates Trump... essentially the old "New World Order" crap from the 90's has transitioned into the "Deep State".

As I posted someplace else evidently Toobin and other writers were “gaming out” election night. He was playing the role of the courts. Somehow it seems appropriate

another schism is coming.  there is such a huge split on this issue between the old world/us and africa/asia/latin america.  and the old world is becoming less religious while africa/asia are booming with converts.

Was he fired?  I haven't followed this closely, but had the impression he was permitted to take a voluntary and temporary leave of absence.

Seeing in his background why he is so pro abortion, though, after trying to coerce his mistress into aborting the child he made then denying paternity.  What an awful person.  But frankly, irrelevant to me.  I don't watch CNN.

I thought I read the New Yorker fired him. But sure, he has/had multiple gigs. But even so, even a suspension is some kind of immediate action. Maybe ask it the other way - has anyone given him a pass or shrugged off his behavior because of the kinds of judges he favors or because he is an evil man 'doing the Lords work"?   ¬¬

toobin is different than, say, a minister caught doing something untoward or "immoral."

toobin, while an insufferable ***, is paid to give political opinions about legal issues.  that's much different than being a moral leader for a church (or even a president or important politician) who should theoretically be above reproach and someone whose behavior people should try to emulate.

should toobin be allowed back in the public sphere?  not according to the standards toobin set when talking about brett kavanaugh when toobin was on his high horse about republicans and allegations of sexual misconduct.  he said his life should be ruined.

so jeffrey, by your own standards you shouldnt be able to work again and your life should be ruined.  got it.

OMG.  Searched on twitter to see the headlines on this and there are a bunch of images purporting to be screenshots of the zoom meeting.  🤮. I really did not want to see that, true or not.

He seems to be characterizing his behavior as a, "mistake."   Not buying it.   The failure to mute the camera may have been in error, but pleasuring himself during a meeting was absolutely not.  It is creepy!

This begs the question, who was he pleasuring himself too? Was it another female in the meeting? Did he have porn playing on the side?

Has he made any mention of the Church blessing these unions?  AFAIK he was speaking of civil unions.  But I haven’t seen the statement in full context.

He's strictly confining his support to legal coverage of civil unions. Not ordained blessing of the unions. That's my understanding.

Francis doesn't seem to want to change Church doctrine as much as get people to take it less seriously. It's almost as if he is trying to move the RCC to a more reformationist view of 'works' and 'faith'.

If he wants to get in the game he can open up the priesthood to females and married people.  It's always amazed me how low the bar is, for a pope to be described as "progressive".
