We made the dreadful mistake of hitting on our high picks in an era where it was unkind to you to do so

We made the dreadful mistake of overpaying calvin johnson and borrowing money from Suh's contract over and over and over again which eventually made it impossible to force him to stay.

The truth is that they didnt hit on enough draft picks during this time to have a good enough team, so they needed to fill holes through free agency.  Which means they had to pay free agents.  and in order to get that money they had to bust their cap by taking the money from suh's deal to do it, thus kicking the cap problem down the road.

It is an indictment of their cap management for overpaying calvin and their talent evaluation in missing on too many picks and forcing them to sign expensive free agents and artificially creating the money to do so.

We got stuck paying Suh and Calvin and restructures for Suh were a basic formality. Mayhew missing on draft picks was the real culprit, that's where you're right. Particularly the Best/Broyles/Leshoure/Young foursome. At that point it was either give up on being competitive for a few more years or go all in and try to win some games now. I get why they did the latter. EIther way they are probably fired now

I would prefer that the Lions not worry about the cap at all, and draft well enough that they can avoid free agency altogether.

I think those days are over. Everyone mentions the Packers, but if you look at their roster the fact they barely sign any free agents is really starting to catch up with them. I think you in today's NFL you need to draft and make smart FA acquisitions.

I don't think we were stuck paying the restructures as I do believe that of the big three of Calvin/Suh/Stafford could have been traded somewhere between 2012-2014.

Yes, you could have traded. Calvin is the only one I would have considered trading probably though.

Football Outsiders has us at 9-7. INteresting. I respect them a lot

Yah, drafting is more important, but a good blend is the best way to go about it. Teams like Seattle,Denver and NE really put themselves over the top with big FA additions. We are at a point where our roster could really see a similar type of benefit from such an add.

9-7 seems fair with the supposed easier schedule this season, but so does 7-9 after last years start. Stafford and the O-Line's performances, working with Cooter's scheme for a full year, is the most interesting (and possibly most important) storyline of the season. Last season showed us that the defense couldn't carry the team as it did in 2014 and so the offense needs to step up and get in the endzone more often. We were 20th in total scoring last year, to be more than 9-7 that is going to have to change. I'm not sold on the idea that it will.

True, but our scoring in the 2nd half was quite good under COoter, we were 6-2 and our schedule this year is much easier on paper(hard to depend on no doubt) as you said. I think the defense is deeper and it gets Levy back. The main key though will be our 32nd ranked run game. Get that up to middle of the pack at least and this team is very dangerous. Fail to do that and we will struggle.
