1st Round (#16): Taylor Decker: OT/Ohio State

Recommended Posts

NFL.com Profile on Taylor Decker

Quote

Ohio State's undisputed leader on the offensive line decided to come back for another year in Columbus instead of applying for entry into the 2015 draft, where he might have been a mid-to-late first-round pick. Decker not only got a chance to win back-to-back national titles during his senior year, but also an opportunity to prove he has the natural bend and elite athleticism (to go along with his obvious length, strength, and toughness) to be a top-five selection. The 2015 Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year played strong as the Buckeyes came up just short of reaching the College Football Playoff.

As was said in the other thread, a safe, boring yet needed pick. Stafford was lucky to make it through a full season last year being sacked 44 times, good for 6th in the league. This team is built around Stafford, he goes down, they go down. I'm not Stafford's biggest fan in the world, but that's the reality of our team makeup. We needed to upgrade the line and ensure that Stafford would stay upright and this goes a long way towards doing that. We also needed to get someone who could move the running game forward, Decker does that too.

Safe boring pick about sums it up.  I'd prefer Lawson but you can't go wrong with another Stafford protector.  I'd give the grade a B- or C+.

Yah, I think you guys nailed it. Decker was never the guy I specifically wanted, but I'm more than ok taking him. I'd be surprised if he isn't at least a stud RT.

Now go D with your next 2 picks.

16. Detroit Lions: Taylor Decker | Grade: D+
Decker is not among the elite tackles in this draft as he does his best work in the running game, but he’s questionable in pass protection. He finished with the No. 22 overall grade in the draft class, but more importantly, his +1.6 pass blocking grade ranked 37th and it’s cause for concern for a first-round offensive tackle. He certainly has the frame and length to develop, but it’s a huge risk in the middle of the first round for a player we saw as more of a late second-round prospect. As a power run blocker, Decker is strong, creating movement at the point of attack and fitting well into a power scheme. Ultimately, he has to make major strides in pass protection to warrant the first-round selection.

OUCH!!! PFF doesn't like the pick at all.

As tough as the line has been on Stafford over the past couple of years, the Detroit Lions have been historically bad in the run game of late. A tackle with strengths in run blocking seems like a good match.

It may have been a bit of a reach, but they must have felt a need bringing in Decker.
