4th Annual DRW Playoff Bubble Watch Thread

Recommended Posts

Huge day. 5 teams in the East have between 85-88 points; 4 will get in.

All 5 teams play today. The Wings are the only one to play at home but also have the toughest opponent.

This afternoon, the Wings (85pts, 8 GR) host Pittsburgh (88 pts, 9 GR).

This evening, Boston (85pts,  7 GR) plays at the surging Leafs.

At the same time, NYI (85pts,  9GR) play at Carolina.

Starting an hour after that, the Flyers (85pts, 9GR) play at Arizona.

The Wings have 8 games remaining including  in the next 4 days. Likely need to go 6-2 to make it.

Hard to even bother with scoreboard watching after this afternoon's massacre. But ...

Boston and NYI both came from behind to pick up 2 points each with regulation wins.

Philly is trailing 1-0 late in the 2nd in Arizona.

The Wings aren't going to catch Pittsburgh, won't catch NYI without an Islanders collapse.

The Wings (85pts 7GR) actually still control their own destiny over Boston (88pts 6GR) and Philly (85pts 8GR) because they have a head to head game against each and because they have one more game to play than Boston does. If the Wings win their final 7 games (lolololol) they'd pass both and finish 3rd in the Atlantic.

Nothing of real importance happening to today. Pittsburgh plays at NYR, may as well cheer for the Rangers but it isn't going to matter. NJD plays at Carolina and may as well cheer for the Canes, because if the Devils win NJ would only be 3 points behind the Wings with 6 games to play. But doesn't really matter, because if NJ passes the Wings the Wings sure aren't passing Philly or Boston.

Monday is the big day.  Both Philly (Winnipeg) and Detroit (Buffalo) host teams they SHOULD beat, whlle Boston has the day off.

And we are sending Jimmy Howard out there to win that game.

If we fail to make the playoffs does the re-tool continue for another year or do you think our GM would finally make major changes to his roster in the off-season?

They want to keep interest in the new building opening up, I can't see them going full rebuild any time soon.

At this point, is Boston the team we should be focusing on?

I would imagine so, I believe the Wings have a game in hand on them and the Flyers have a game in hand on the Wings.

Still watching both Philly and Boston.

Philly is a bit tougher, because even on points but they have 2 games in hand. But they have a tough game tonight against the Capitals and they play AT Detroit next week.

Boston is 1pt up on Detroit with same number of games played. Boston has tough games at St. Louis and Chicago this week but the Wings play AT the Bruins next week. I think the Wings will lose that game. If the Wings had jumped ahead of the Bruins last night I really would have liked their chances.

The Flyers tied the Caps with 5 minutes to go last night and won it in a SO, so the Wings no longer control their destiny over them.

No big games tonight. Florida and Tampa both play. Crazy to think they are tied for 1st in the division only 6 points ahead of the Wings. A few more wins over the past 7 games would have resulted in a different mood.

With 5 games left and separatrd by a point, if either Boston or Detroit to win in regulation the game againat each other next week, they'd be in the drivers seat. Wings shouldn't be more than a point worse than the Bruins over the other 4 games each have.

Tonight is one of the best chances the Wings have to pick up a point or two on Boston. Wings host Wild, Bruins at St.Louis.

Wings win, Bruins win. Unbelievable to me what happened in St. Louis,. Blues are at home, going in to this Allen had been shutting out everyone left and right, the Blues were only 2 points behind Dallas so everything to play for, even score 5 goals - but lost 6-5?! You can't count on anyone this time of year.

4 games to go and mathematically the Wings are still alive to win the division. 6 points behind Florida, 4 points behind Atlanta.

Boston is off tomorrow. Philadelphia hosts Ottawa in a matinee. Wings play at Toronto.

With the Bruins ' win last night, the Wings can't clinch by the end of their final home game of the year on Wednesday, even if they win the next 2 games. There is a chance they could be mathematically eliminated by the end of their final home game if they lose the next 2 games. Most likely the Wings will skate off the Joe's ice on Wednesday night with the fans not knowing whether or not the streak will continue.

Flyers beat Ottawa earlier today. No surprise there. 2 up on the Wings and have a game in hand. The Flyers play red-hot Pittsburgh tomorrow.

New Jersey and Carolina now are both officially eliminated - won't make the playoffs, won't catch the Wings, non-factors.

4 teams for 3 spots:

- NYI  93 pts 5 GR

- Philadelphia 91 pts 5 GR

- Detroit 91 pts 3 GR

- Boston 90 pts 4 GR

With 3 games to play, Wings control their own destiny with respect to Boston. If the Flyers lose to Pittsburgh tomorrow in regulation the Wings will, also control their own destiny with respect to Philadelphia. NYI isn't a realistic target, but I'm including them because the franchise does have a few instances of big collapses in their history

if Chicago beats Boston in regulation tomorrow, the Wings can clinch with a game to spare by beating Philly and Boston back to back in regulation.

Even if nothing is determined after the last game at The Joe, I bet the fans send the Wings off to a well deserved ovation.
