This is what I love about Ryan Raburn. He proves everyone wrong. If you think he sucks, you'll be proven wrong. If you think he's good, you'll be proven wrong. Even his defense is like that. He'll make a boneheaded play one inning and then make a diving catch or great throw two innings later. He's great social media material.

This might be the best description ever of a baseball player.

GOtta add someone. Otherwise we are probalby a good 3-4 wins worse in the OF

COlorado just added Parra, so Gonzalez probalby just got even more available

What would the Tigers need to give up for Carlos Gonzalez?

Check the offseason thread, there's a bunch of talk in there from last night.

This, as it stands, is the worst OF in the majors. We go nowhere with this team having this outfield. We need to sign one of the big boys, and I still think we will.

This outfield includes JD Martinez. He ain't terrible.

This outfield also includes Maybin, Gose, Collins, Aviles. I don't think its the worst in the majors.

But when taking into consideration that catcher will be below average, Castellanos hasn't proven to be average yet (I think he'll be fine this season), VMartinez is on the downside of his career, Iglesias is an empty batting average, and Kinsler might be due to tail off, the offense could be a problem.

is that the consensus projection for McCann? That he is a below average MLB catcher...sub or negative WAR? Eyeballs only it seems like he projects as being that which is important in catchers...good defense and some power.

edit: this isn't that encouraging

But he's not Avila, so he must be good.

Plus he yelled at Iglesias. Avila, if he could've yelled, wouldn't have known at whom he was looking.

McCann is going to have to improve his hitting or excel defensively to be a long term option. He's fine for this year because it's worth seeing if he can improve, but I'm not that optimistic.

I'm not saying he shouldn't be tried this season. I agree its worthwhile to see if he can improve. But I think its a bit unfair to him to expect him to do much. Of the easily available options, Saltalamacchia is probably as good of a platoon partner as any because he has some potential to hit RHPs, he is a veteran, and he is cheap.

I'm afraid that there won't be enough offense elsewhere and his lack of hitting adds into that vulnerability. I realize that I'm probably in the minority on the offense. I know for certain that I am less optimistic about it than you.

The worrisome part with McCann is how badly he tailed off as his PA increased. By the last two months of the season he was below 600 ops. Now maybe he just ran down because he wasn't used to the MLB grind in his first full season, but of course the more ominous interpretation is that the once he was well scouted pitchers pretty will had his number.

Just for contrast, when a young player like Castellanos finishes the season on an upswing that reinforces optimism about him figuring out instead of being figured out.

McCann has an attribute going for him that may bode very well, he's considered uncommon brainy. Now there are different types of brains. We'll see if he should be grading thesis on nuclear propulsion or correcting pitch sequencing before too long.

Cespedes belongs in a Tiger uniform. I feel he should have been here from the beginning.

Get 'er done, Al!

I can't see Moya taking that next step in his development to be a passable option for us. Yes, he has power but the same reason why he has power (his tall frame) means that he will most likely always have significant holes in his swing. To the point where even if he improves his plate discipline there will still be significant problems as exposed last year in Toledo.

I'm much more optimistic of Tyler Collins.
