Tigers Journalists Better Template his name Tigers: Jarrod Saltalamacchia

Recommended Posts

I like it. Like everyone else has said, he's not much with the glove, which makes him a Fick/Munson type of backup. Which is fine. The backup catcher is going to be lousy at hitting, or lousy at catching, or both. Usually it is a lousy righthanded hitter with a good glove - I hate those guys, they're boring and they are a dime a dozen. So he's a decent lefthanded bat (I know, he's a switch hitter) who can get 250 PA's at catcher, 1B and DH. And he gets paid the minimum. Good job - the bench just got better than it was last year.

So far I think that Al Avila is rag-dolling the other GM's.

Won't Toledo need a 1B or does Dean Green move up? I thought I read, though, that as a 1B, he makes a great DH.

Yes, last year someone here made the observation that Dean Green hurts you with his glove even if you DH him.

I don't know if it's Al, or just a change in org' philosophy, by the difference this offseason is glaring. It's been a lot of fun so far. They're playing a bit of moneyball for once and the strategy of it is more fun than just throwing money at everything.

Let's keep in mind that this Salt Man can hit left handed. We were pretty short on those guys. And we got him for a fraction of what Alex would've cost.

So, who's this catching coach we now have? Did we always have a catching coach? Did we hire this catching coach just so we could get Salt Man? Great move either way.

It's so long, you'd need someone to first make "saltala" as a 7-letter word, then if you had each of m-a-c-c-h-I-a in your rack you could add to that. Only about 15 points for the macchia part, but pretty good chance one of the tiles would land on a double word or triple word score. Plus of course the 50 bonus points for using all 7 letters, or with inflation is that 75 points now?

Apparently his name means "jump the bush"

Meaning of Jarrod Saltalamacchia's last name - Spudart

And here I thought Caste.. Casta...Nick's name was hard to spell.

Do you think Al was always sort of suggesting these reasonable, mid level deals that would probably help the team, but then Dave was always "That's good, but what if I turned these 15 players into Max Scherzer?"

He does seem to be making very different moves from what Dombrowski would have made. I also enjoy his openness before and after making moves. This off-season has been fun so far.

Oh - I think it does (have zero downside) as we got him basically for nothing. Between the bad press on his pitch framing and the poor plate results after the concussion he has been pretty much discounted to replacement level by the league - so whatever he gives us is all plus.

Salty came into the leaque with a lot of fanfare but for whatever reasons has only managed a couple of good seasons. Overall I see him as a pretty big wildcard - and I don't mean that in any particular bad way - he's just a guy who comes with a big variance.

Maybe, but even if Salty is a big wildcard, it's nice to have the potential upside when the other option is Holaday who we know provides no potential other than a below average placeholder.

This is true. It took a while but this has become an interesting as well as entertaining off-season. They're filling obvious holes without the usual evasions and piddling around and surprising us with stuff like the acquisition of Saltamacchiakochevesky.

Apparently he is not the Tigers coach. Salty was working with Gary Tuck who was his former coach in Boston. The first article I read made it sound as if he was employed by the Tigers.

Just to stir the pot a little...

...I would say Avila's results are a mixed bag right now, though I would say positive overall.

I am a big fan of the K-Rod move and Salty moves (especially after letting Avila walk for what I thought was peanuts, only for Salty to be even peanuttier). Love the Zimmermann signing.

Then we have Maybin and Pelfrey, who I am not keen on.

Lowe would be a positive signing.

Still need to address LF.

This is about where I am at so far this offseason. I am reserving judgement on Lowe until contract specs come out.

Still some work to do. But Avila has been busy so far. It'd probably be fun to shadow him around the meetings this week.

Can't we just pretend this move has zero downside?

Well, technically, there is a possible downside: Saltalamacchia could have a terrible year at the plate, and we could keep running him out there while he loses us games. That could happen. But a lot would have to go wrong with him, including injury, for that to happen.

I'm a big fan of this move. I like getting a win-positive bat at catcher, and if Saltalamacchia can manage to play anything approaching replacement level defense, this will be a huge win.

I love dealing with the Marlins. I have a trade for them to consider: Steven Moya for Jose Fernandez.
