Heyman is reporting that the Marlins are paying his salary and that the Tigers only have to pay the league minimum. Salty is a switch hitter who has a .772 lifetime OPS vs RHP. This is a fantastic move.

They picked up someone who could help from not the bargain bin, but the, somebody is paying his salary bin.

Salty is not much of a defender, but he can hit and should be a significant upgrade over Holaday. I was not looking forward to Holaday starting 30-40 games.

Similarly, I was not looking forward to McCann for 120-130 games. I like the idea of 80-100 games, with Salty 60-80 (against mostly RHP).

Nice job--one area that I thought we were vulnerable is our depth at AAA. Now we can keep Holaday there as depth. Would like to see us grab an OF and 1B with some MLB experience to play there, too.

Salty has played 1B in the past so I don't think it is necessary to target someone who can play 1B.

Nice, ML minimum for a guy whose a better hitter than your starting catcher and switch hits. Defense is not good, but still, can't hardly beat that. Can probably pinch hit too if needed.

Another catcher who has had recent serious concussion problems - hard to know what we may get this year.

Can't we just pretend this move has zero downside?

Oh - I think it does (have zero downside) as we got him basically for nothing. Between the bad press on his pitch framing and the poor plate results after the concussion he has been pretty much discounted to replacement level by the league - so whatever he gives us is all plus.

Salty came into the leaque with a lot of fanfare but for whatever reasons has only managed a couple of good seasons. Overall I see him as a pretty big wildcard - and I don't mean that in any particular bad way - he's just a guy who comes with a big variance.

He was pretty good last year after being signed by Arizona. I read he chose Detroit because his former catching coach in Boston is now in Detroit.

Salty had the concussion in 2014. He had a .745 OPS last year, so he seems like he has recovered. He is limited by his defense which has always been bad.

That's another big plus if his bat is good... can give Miggy a few days off of 1st (either on the bench for a day off or a 1/2 day off at DH...).

I legitimately don't know anything about his concussion issues, but he hit .273 .339 .545 .884 after the all star break last year. Only 110 at bats, but it at least makes him look healthy.

Tigers Sign Jarrod Saltalamacchia - MLB Trade Rumors

Could be killer in scrabble if his name was not a proper noun.

It's so long, you'd need someone to first make "saltala" as a 7-letter word, then if you had each of m-a-c-c-h-I-a in your rack you could add to that. Only about 15 points for the macchia part, but pretty good chance one of the tiles would land on a double word or triple word score. Plus of course the 50 bonus points for using all 7 letters, or with inflation is that 75 points now?

Apparently his name means "jump the bush"

I think with a catcher you get a value downgrade even after recovery since the possibility of another concussion is higher at the catcher position and effects seem to be cumulative. Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the signing at all, just kind of amazed that he went for basically nothing and so am sort of ruminating on that.
