The timing of this one is very strange. For some reason, we had this guy rated much higher than the other guys who seemingly are of this ilk and felt the need to sign him early – and to give him two years, when I feel certain there would be guys willing to take one year a little later on. All i can conclude is someone knows him personally and has some insight into what caused his terrible second half last year, or the analytics show that it wasn't really his fault. Becuase at face value, 2/16 for this guy seems like a lot of wasted money to me.

Good point that this may be an analytics driven decision

The idea that he be judged on year one back from Tommy John would not sound. They looked at his projected velocity and arsenal. Assuming he's going to improve his durability and velocity he may be a bargain. Otherwise, he's a 5th starter.

Actually, the opposite could just as well be true: they're going with their gut on this one. Because despite the flurry of analytics hires, the Tigers are still a gut-decision organization.

AA's new rules.........new pitchers for the Tigers must already have had Tommy John surgery behind them...... One has to wonder if Greg Holland could be the next signing?...........

Giving two years to someone who is garbage is really dumb. You can get Pelfrey caliber pitchers off the waiver wire or in trades for nothing any time you want. Mind boggling

Career 89 ERA+

Last year he was still below league average despite getting incredibly lucky as he struck out 4.7 per 9 while walking 2.5

Has crap stuff, can't miss bats, doesn't have elite control. Guess they're hoping they'll just get lucky and he'll fluke into a decent season as he's done a couple of times half a decade ago. But just about anyone could do that without costing you 16 million dollars

I've tried to register and sign in a couple times but had problems. Been a Tigers fan since '72.

I live in Minneapolis and Twins fans are happy to see Pelfrey go. If it is two years that's surprising.

I can't believe there are any other teams that were willing to give him this deal. If there were, I wish we'd have let them do it. My assumption now can only be that Chris Young will get much more than this, because otherwise I would have preferred him by far (and honestly didn't think he would get more than 2/20).

The Twins jock sniffers were plenty glad to have him for the 1st part of last year.

I'm not sure how the analytics guys thought this was a good idea. 1 year meh...2 years :dead::dead:

Pelfry will be the first test of the "analytics"

Becuase nothing I see tells me they had to do this.

You can trade Eugenio Suarez for them.

No, that would get you someone with a far better ERA, health, and 1 more strikeout per 9 innings :(

See, there you go. Now we know it was a gut signing.

In all seriousness, if you believe Fangraphs, Pelfrey's a 2-win pitcher who was worth $16MM last year, and his fastball ticked up to 93. Plus, his BABIP was .334, suggesting unlucky.

On the other hand, only his curveball was on the positive side of runs above average, and he threw that only 9% of the time. It is also historically his best pitch, so maybe the Tigers plan to have him rely on it more.

Most of the analytics guys on twitter are laughing at the Tigers for this signing. Personally, I don't mind the move if they plan to go over the luxury tax. If not, then it's an odd move.

On the bright side, hitters have a career OPS of .915 (OPS+ of 136) against his 1.750 WHIP and 1.46 SO/W and 5.91 ERA in only 32 IP. Well, the bright side being that its a small sample size, I guess.

I cannot understand this move. I will read what others have to say as this conversation continues, but I can't see how Pelfrey warrants a contract at all given , what a 1.47 WHIP last year?

At the very best, this is a head sctatcher because it appears to be totally senseless.

According to BrooksBaseball, he scrapped his four seamer last year and threw 73% sinkers. He had his lowest walk and home run rates of his career as a result...actually it's probably just a random thing but I'm searching for something.

Ilitch did say he wanted the best players and wasn't worried much about money. I think this signing proves the latter.
