Was really bummed after OSU crapped the bed last week. However, I'm over it, and I still hate these clowns. Words can't describe how good it would feel to win.

That WAS NOT a penalty IMO. The punter took two steps before punting and became a runner once he did and shifted outside the tackle box. Once again though, the NCAA will lead from behind and make a ruling in they offseason as it pertains to these rugby style punts.

Another blown call by bought referees. Clear hold on #82 in the end zone. Had a complete handful of jersey. Not even mentioned by the announcing team. Clear as day on the replay.

The kicker took two steps forward with the ball. When does he become a runner then? Outside the tackle boxes only?

Here's your answer

The kicker only gets the special protection while he is a kicker or doing a kicking act. Remember it requires a subjective decision from officials and as much as we try to be uniformed we are not always. If a punter is running with the ball he is a runner until he starts to kick it. When a kicker "tries to fake" or kicks on the run, his window of protection narrows.

For full protection the kicker must be an obvious kicker, in an obvious scrimmage kick formation and in the act of kicking.

What we look for:

If contact is made with the plant foot before, during and after the kick and before the kicker establishes himself as a runner, that will always be a roughing the kicker. Or at least should be called that way by the referee.

A punter loses his added protection and become a runner once he regains his feet and is no longer in the act of kicking. The protection is no expanded when a kicker stands with his leg/foot extended for a prolonged time in a effort to draw a penalty.

The punter is not free game to be hit if the snap is short, short hopped or snapped high - he still gets the protection.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to follow up I would be more than happy to clear any confusion you have. You are very astute to notice commentators struggling with the rules. Most think it is the officials who struggle.

Take care Steven and I look forward to more of your insight and questions.

An obvious penalty that would be called by every official on every team in every game.

Don't want to sit here and call out every officiating miscue, but the holds are obvious.

There's an agenda going on here. This isn't fair at all. They can hold every other play and nothing. Guy obviously lines up Offsides for Ohio State and nothing. This is ridiculous. What's the point in playing the game if they are going to hand it to one side from the start.

Mr. wonderful Urban Meyer just about ran poor Holly Rowe over at half. No time to talk to a sideline reporter. Probably trying to figure out why his check only bought him a 4 point lead....

Go back and watch the replay of OSU's touchdown to go up 21-10. Both #68 and #50 on the left side of their line both had our linemen held. I just turned it off because I refuse to watch this rubbish. The officials aren't even on the damn field.
