Good move. Owed about $10-12 million depending on whether they exercise the $6M club option for 2017 or pay a $4M buyout

Tigers To Acquire Francisco Rodriguez - MLB Trade Rumors

Does he immediately become our closer for sure, or do we bring in another potential closer like Soria and let them figure it out in spring training? I think this is a good move, since he has actually been good recently, but I am also a bit leery of him suddenly falling off a cliff, since he's getting up there in age.

#Tigers offered Joakim Soria two years and $13M-$14M. He wants better; #Tigers were uncomfortbale. K-Rod makes that type of money.

#Brewers acquire Javier Betancourt and player to be named from #Tigers, source says. @ACardenas13 first with the story.

Guess that answers it. Well, at least the guy is a proven closer. Hope he gives us a solid year or two. And hey, he's Venezuelan!

Seems like Seattle gave up more for Benoit who is going to be 39.

My guess the PTBNL is someone decent. Looks like FRods contract is a bargain.

Francisco Rodriguez's changeup had best @fangraphs run value of career.

Opponents missed on 40% of swings, went 11-for-112 vs it

Looking at @fangraphs pitch value leaderboard, could make case that K-Rod changeup was as valuable a pitch to a P as there was in MLB

The Tigers chose K-Rod over Soria not because of money; K-Rod is swing-and-miss closer, Soria pitches to contact. They prefer the former.

The Tigers were interested in right-handed closer Joakim Soria but as of this weekend, weren’t really on the same page in contract talks.

I doubt the ptbnl is anyone of significance. Recrnt draft picks are no longer traded as ptbnl, so if it's a known desired player, he would just be included.

Now, maybe the brewers have a list of guys that are playing in winter ball or something that they want to wait to decide on. In that regard it could be a guy like Moyà or machado but I doubt it.

One of the 3 things I figured on my minimum list of moves I wanted to see them make.

Interesting, when I got the phone alert about the trade I assumed the PTBNL was a decent recent draft pick, when did that change?

As long as the PTBNL isn't someone surprisingly good, this seems like a very good deal. He's not super old, and he's been consistently good for a long time. As his velocity/strikeouts have declined a bit he's really tightened up his control. I like it.

About a month before this past draft. Now, drafted players can be traded after the World Series.

They also changed the ptbnl rule, where any ptbnl had to be eligible for trade at the time.

It could be recent draft pick, but that's just because he is already eligible for trade.

This seems like a good deal to me. I wonder how quickly they can acquire someone for the 8th inning.

Who is to say for sure that Rodriguez isn't the 8th inning guy?

And just for completeness, k rod has a pretty good contract, but it's not insanely good or anything. It's not that far from what you could get soria for. It's better than soria, but that's why you trade a decent prospect to make up that difference.

The ptbnl won't be anyone that good.

I don't think the PTBNL we are sending will be that great, but it might be someone decent since we are getting one back too. Who knows.

I say it.

You're probably right, but I can hope that (1) the bullpen gets used a bit differently next season and/or (but mostly and) (2) Rodriguez isn't the best relief pitcher that the Tigers acquire this offseason.

I totally missed that, thanks for the info sir.

So, there are PTBNLs going back and forth?
