Roberts - Leflore - Meyer. Was suppose to be the new Horton -Stanley - Kaline trio for the next 15 years! Roberts and Meyers had a few nice years after leaving the organization.

I believed that too.

Andres Torres... another one of Smith's legends. He's the bane of Lynn Henning's existance. That's why they build Comerica the way they did... because they knew that one day would have Torres patrolling CF at Comerica National Park.

Today is also Phil Plantier's 47th birthday. Plantier was an "almost-Tiger" in 1996. Signed as a free agent following an injury-plagued 1995 season, new general manager Randy Smith touted Plantier as a power bat in the middle of the lineup who could protect Cecil Fielder. He was penciled in by fellow new manager Buddy Bell as the everyday #5 hitter...until Smith inexplicably traded Plantier to Oakland in the final week of spring training in exchange for minor leaguers Fausto Cruz (14 games in Detroit) and Ramon Fermin (0 games in Detroit). Plantier did make it onto a card, however...

Finally, today is also the 48th birthday of former Indians and Mariners manager Eric Wedge. Wedge spent the spring training of 1996 with the Tigers, and played in 96 games for the Mud Hens that year, somehow not being called up to a team that lost 109 games.

Ah, yes, the curious case Phil Plantier. An additional 1000 points to BoomGaspar for this one.

And that South Bend hat that Kevin Tolar is sporting looks terrible. Two different fonts? Just deplorable. But it looks good on the White Sox.

I just got very interested in Ray Hayworth, based on the information above that he lived to be 98 years old.

- He played with Cobb in 1926, just briefly (12 games)

- He played on the '35 champions although as a catcher he was behind Cochrane

- His glove is in Cooperstown! For playing 131 errorless games consecutively as the Tigers' first-string catcher from September '31 to August'32

- At the age of 95 he threw out the first pitch at Tiger Stadium, for the last game there in 1999

- And finally, I like things like this - he was born in High Point, NC and died 98 years later in Salisbury, NC - they are 30 miles apart. So after his baseball career as a player and coach, he was able to go back home and live out his days there. That's nice.

So that's what's new about me today, I'm a big Ray Hayworth fan now.

Why would Adam Everett pose with a bat?

In fairness it appears that he is at a neighborhood park and probably joined a pickup game with the local kids. He can hit those pitches.

And decked out on a '61 Topps card too!!!!

I was going to use his '09 Topps base card...but the name on the card is unreadable in scans because of all the foil.

A tip of the hat to Zeb Eaton, a North Carolina native. He was a part of the 1945 World Series Championship team.
