Not shown in the Frank Navin picture is the snifter of brandy condescendingly clutched in one hand and his other hand placed on his upper leg to maximize the effect that he is your better.

"Excuse me, did you say something about my snifter?"

Just as in the past two years, there is no picture of Lou Vedder.  There is, however, this nifty drawing of what appears to be a man in a hat.  Here is another Vedder...

Tolmon spends his after baseball career career as a tooth model and an Eddie Vedder impersonator.  He never works on his birthday.  Too busy gettin’ baked.

For some reason that Todd Jones is 50 makes me feel old more than usual today.

I met Tood several times when he was with the Tigers and he was always very friendly and conversational. I think he is/was a guy who knew his place in history and soaked up every moment of being a professional baseball player that he could. He will always be one of my favorite Tigers despite and maybe because of the rollercoaster moniker.

Yeah - I think he got to where he was OK with the 'rollercoaster' thing, though I never thought it was fully deserved. I think it was largely because most nights Todd preferred to pitch around or walk a left hander to face a right hander in a high leverage situation, even if it loaded the bases. I never thought it was so much him being up and down as him doing the expected (for him). I admired the man's confidence in what he believed/understood about his own capabilities and how he thought the odds played best for him.

He also embraced it because Harwell was the one who came up with the nickname.

Hard to believe that denim collared undershirts didn't take off in baseball.

When Woody Davis' baseball career ended he found his true calling, selling pies.

So, today is his birthday and the Mud Hens are playing one of those 10:30am school day games.  Game is over in around 3 hours, shower and all of that, flight to Durham for the next series.  There's some travel involved, but I suspect Deuce is going to arrange quite a bash for the veteran backstop.  Tomorrow's game against the Bulls could be ugly.
