Just a bit before my time.

I don't know why, but I think that his '79 performance wasn't enough to cement his status as a core player.  Here's one fan's recollection:

https://dailyfungo.com/2008/05/27/may-27-1980-the-day-the-tigers-traded-jason-thompson/

Sparky didn't like Ron LeFlore either.  He once described him as "a great offensive player", meaning that he didn't like the glove or especially the arm, and he didn't like the attitude either, mostly about punctuality.  When the Tigers traded LeFlore to the Expos (hey - did we remember to put LeFlore on our latest Expos/Tigers list?) Sparky phoned Dick Williams to warn him.

And Rico Brogna too: "The kid has a chance to be a good ball player some day, but I don't want to wait to find out".

Sparky ran off Howard Johnson as well.

That pissed me off, I wanted them to trade Larry Herndon after '84 and put HoJo in left in '85.  Sparky didn't like HoJo at third, called him "clang clang" which was pretty bush in my opinion, but didn't see the possibilities of putting him in the outfield.  I'm not a great big Sparky fan.

Aside from the poor glove, the other rumor about HoJo is that his use of recreational chemistry didn't sit well with the rather old school Mr Anderson.

Regarding Jason Thompson one other point: As hard as it it to believe given recent history, by '79-'80 the Tigers were getting to be a lopsidedly left handed hitting team. Parrish was about the only RH power threat (Trammell really hadn't a half dozen HR in a season yet). and Thompson and Kemp were being hurt by the fact that every left hand pitcher with a pulse was being sent out against those Tiger lineups. It made good sense to move one of Kemp or Thompson for balance - but Cowens was a horrible return.

I think Sparky was great at managing stars, but not so great at working with young players.

Johnson never wound up being a regular outfielder, so maybe he was bad out there too.  Castellanos might be the new Howard Johnson.

Cunningham reminds me a little of Inge. I wonder how far George could hit a golf ball?

I looked up Johnnie Williams because I wanted to know his heritage...  and I know where he's buried.  Our aunt and uncle lived in Mission Hills, CA. IT's about a mile north of their house in the north end of the San Fernando Valley.  Passed by it all the time when I visited there for a week.

He's from Hawaii..
