2015 Off-season thread

I prefer the extra bases that Kinsler and Upton can provide over Gose/Maybin.

Agreed. I was normally not opposed to Gose batting 1st against RHP, but Upton fits pretty well at #2 slot, so you can just slot Gose 9th when he plays. Kinsler hits into a lot of GIDP so batting him leadoff takes care of that.

Kinsler/Upton/Miggy/JD/bounceback Victor could give you a lot of 1st inning leads.

I predict that Justin Upton starts messing around with Kate and a clubhouse spat insues. Shortly thereafter, Upton is traded to the Whitesox for a bag of hairless balls.

This team is amazing, year after year. You just knew something big was coming.

I remember when it seemed like we had to beg players to sign here even when we were offering top dollar. Now it seems like the Tigers can sign whoever they want if they are competitive financially.

Thinking on things further, I think it's like 80% Upton opts out after 2 years. I don't see any reason other than injury that he won't be good enough to test it again.

This won't be a bad thing if we have OF depth by then, as trading $44M and a 3rd round pick for 2 years of Upton and a pick between 1st and 2nd rounds is a great deal. But if we don't have depth, the next contract to an OF could still be bad.

All the guys we have now are controlled through 2017 if we want (literally everyone on the 40-man except Salty and Aviles). So if 2016 is a success, the only big organizational things now are the next TV deal and what to do with JD.

And then the 2017 and 2018 off-seasons are looking to be huge, with Upton, JD, Anibal, Victor, Kinsler likely to come off the books then.

I predict that Upton will be unpopular among casual fans because he is streaky, strikes out a lot and has the reputation/ appearance of not going all out. It won't matter though because I also expect him to be very productive.

I don't know. It's good info that he's been streaky the past couple years, but I think that's just randomness. I don't expect to see it any more than a typical player next year.

I remember when he was on the trade block 3 years ago he had huge home/road splits that some were concerned about (i.e. he could only hit in Arizona's friendly ballpark), and those concerns went *poof* in the night.

I think guys that don't make good contact tend to be streaky. I don't even think it's a negative, just that I think it might be perceived as a negative.

Love reading the WSI forum today. Rationalization city.

This was my favorite post.

I already heard that today. "He sure strikes out a lot. We signed Rob Deer?"

I'm just glad that the roster is good again and we don't have to walk around feeling inferior to the Twins, Indians, White Sox, and Royals. That was degrading. Even my wife was looking at me differently.

I remember thinking the Tigers were pretty good last year out of spring training. They killed the Twins in their first series. Then a lot of things went wrong. What can the Tigers do now? That's my worry about this signing. Are they better than they were last year at this time? We'll see. They won't be able to trade off anybody if everything does go wrong again. That's my biggest worry.

This is their team for the next two years. If they fail this year, they go for it again next year. If they fail next year, then it's time to re-build with lots of money coming off the books in 17 and 18.

I love how this team has sort of been retooling on the fly for almost a decade now. The team has been called old since like 2007. Now, it's a whole new cast of characters, minus Verlander, and people still act like it's the same team.

Eventually they'll have to give up the ghost. But they've done a great job of keeping things rolling and not becoming the Phillies.

I know. I remember getting excited because we signed Craig Paquette, because he was a player I'd actually heard of!

A lot of money with a dead farm system. They need to spend big on the bigger international talent. Seems like the Tigers are never involved with the top (Baseball America) international talent. They can't build with their draft picks. They have almost no room to improve from within otherwise, imo. They have been in a cycle of throwing money to fix their problems.

I think Avila should be give a chance to show that he can change that. Things might look different in a couple of years.

And signing Upton means they can't do that?

I hope so, but it does look bleak now. I do love me some Norris/Fulmer, though.
