5 things to watch in Detroit Lions vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Five things to watch in Friday's exhibition between the Detroit Lions and Jacksonville Jaguars (8 p.m., CBS):

• Starting block: Most of the Lions' starters will play about a half Friday night, in their most extensive -- and, in some cases, final -- action of the preseason. Matthew Stafford has only played three series across two games, but he has been sharp. Don't expect Calvin Johnson to play. The Lions don't want to expose him to injury.

• On guard: Another starter who won't be playing is Larry Warford, who's nursing a high ankle sprain. That means Manny Ramirez will take Warford's spot at right guard, and rookie first-round pick Laken Tomlinson will get his first start at left guard. Tomlinson has played well in extended action. If he keeps it up, there's no reason he should go back to the bench behind Ramirez when Warford returns.

• Rookie showdown: There were three running backs taken ahead of Ameer Abdullah in this year's draft. One of them, Jaguars rookie T.J. Yeldon, will make his preseason debut Friday. Yeldon is returning from a finger injury but will see time with the first team. Abdullah should get a number of touches tonight, in what amounts to a dress rehearsal for Week 1 after playing sparingly last week.

• Nine lives: The Lions' entire projected starting defensive line -- Ziggy Ansah, Jason Jones, Haloti Ngata and Caraun Reid -- is out Friday, and that means more time for three players fighting to be the team's ninth lineman. Jermelle Cudjo has played well at tackle, and Phillip Hunt is the best pass rusher of the bunch. Larry Webster has had a disappointing preseason.

• Bait and tackle: Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin said he was disappointed in his team's tackling in last week's loss to Washington. Austin was speaking mostly of the second and third units, but with just over two weeks till the opener, that's an area the Lions have to clean up.

And one for the Jaguars …

• Hit 'em up: Jacksonville's defensive backs were accused of dirty play for targeting receiver Odell Beckham Jr. in last week's exhibition against the New York Giants. Lions receivers will be on high alert Friday, but the Jaguars' physical style could help coaches sort through a crowded receiver field.

defense looked eminently shreddable in the Jag's first drive.

Okay, I don't want to say SOL, but man... the defense looked like SOL there. Ugh.

Refs are in mid season cheating form. Personal foul and PI called on back to back plays when it should have been holding and offensive PI.

Preseason for ya.

Preseason man.

Yeah... I know, I know... I don't want to draw too many conclusions, but still, it's very unimpressive.

Lol they called it a touchdown. Apparently fumbling at the one yard line is a touchdown.

Real nice pass from Stafford. No reason to play him anymore.

Almost like Tate lulled the DB to sleep and then just took off away from him.

Tate and stafford have developed a nice chemistry. Tate is a craftsman.

It seems like they are playing a VERY vanilla scheme right now.

The Lions aren't the only ones in mid season form...

The fact that this is a national game prob means there are degenerates gambling on this outcome rather than the random Serbian league soccer games

Wow. Interception is called back on "illegal contact," there was no illegal contact. Refs have not been sharp tonight. Lions have been on the receiving end of some rotten calls.

Their 3 best defensive players didn't play. Not concerned YET.
