Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't.

Maybe if they had spent more in the offseason they wouldn't have needed to trade away all those prospects for rentals.

Or maybe they were better able to assess their needs in July...

Jeff Samardzija simply looks like a White Sox pitcher.

I don't want him on the Tigers for that completely irrational reason / emotional basis.

Agreed. Let's pass on that overrated, mullet-sporting douchebag.

The goal is to build the best possible team you can afford.

An 80 win team that spent 100 million got better value than a 90 win team that spent 200 million. What exactly does the 80 win team get for that?

We usually don't know all that much about how any given owner approaches financial management of his team though. Back in the day, there were a lot of owners who were not rich enough that they could afford for their team to operate at negative cash flow. Bill Veeck, Charlie Finley, the Kaufmans, and even Fetzer. For those teams winning a championship was an aspiration, but never the primary management objective. The latter was always to keep their heads above water. Super rich owners like Steinbrenner, Allen, and Ilitch to a lesser extent have changed the modern calculus. These are owners that can afford to operate cash flow negative to satisfy their ambition to win, especially in an era where team resale value is increasing enough to take the edge off the cash losses anyway.

Bottom line, we probably don't know all that accurately with most teams where the balance between wanting to win and wanting/needing to be profitable is - we really don't even know it for our own with much clarity so I doubt there is any universal right answer to whether a team provides it's owner with more of the value *he* values winning 80 at 100 million cost or 90 at 200 million cost

Absolutely.

I think the current practice by fans and other analysts in baseball to break down value on a cost per win basis makes for interesting discussion. There is no shortage of transaction analysis articles that come out after major free agent signings, where a team is lauded or mocked for how much they spent to obtain X number of wins. We don't really see that in other sports, but that is because any sort of value based analysis is much harder to do, as it is particularly difficult to quantify production in the other sports that are more team based.

We are fortunate as fans of the Tigers to have an owner that appears willing to spend money, possibly losing money to do so.

If we were fans of another team whose owner was more interested in the bottom line, I would probably feel differently about maximizing value at the expense of immediate production.

I do believe that the second Fister trade was done to clear money for Joe Nathan, for what that is worth.

It was the textbook case of subtraction by addition.

The reverse standings show that we are the second worst AL team but are #8 with a ton of bad NL teams to leap. St Louis is somehow screwing us again

Top 10 pick seems secure. But as bad as this team has played over the last month, tough to see how we can pick much higher than 8. The teams below us are truly terrible.

Sounds like a challenge! I think we're up for it.

It could be neck and neck with Oakland. With 28 left, they are 6 under 500 over their last 28, we are 8 under over our last 28 and we are only 3 games ahead of them in the win column. Colorado is only 6 under in their last 28 so we are still in the 'running' for 6,7 or 8.

#9 pick right now

#9?

No, that's not correct. We're still in the #8 spot, with the closest team behind us the San Diego Padres at 1 game back. Order right now is:

1. Atlanta

2. Philly (tied w/ Atlanta, pending tie-breaker)

3. Colorado

4. Cincinnati

5. Miami

6. Oakland (Miami & A's are also tied)

7. Milwaukee

8. Detroit

9. San Diego

Don't even vote for Detroit to lose...

Just keep asking for Boston-CWS-Seattle, and SD-Arizona to keep winning games.

We'll get there, the losses will come (for us).

I'm hoping for the Tigers to win, so they do not get a protected pick. I do not want them to sign free agents that are tied to compensation.

Yeah that 2nd round pick is going to be way more valuable than whatever schmuck top free agent they could possibly sign.

If it isn't protected, then a free agent would cost them a first rounder.

Either way, they should not sign free agents (hi, Mike Cuddyer) that have compensation tied to them. They need to work on their system. They need all the picks they can get.

Why? So they can score well on a list? They need ML players... Getting that from 4 draft picks is like a 6% success rate.... That pays off in 2019. No thanks.
