Top 10 Draft Slot Watch

Recommended Posts

For clarification, my comments are not meant to imply or suggest the draft isn't important.

It is important and if a team does a good job they benefit significantly.

But I simply think it is a good idea to keep in mind that it is at best a 50/50 shot to get a serviceable MLB player in the first round, after which the likelihood that a player selected is able to contribute on a MLB squad in a meaningful way (i.e. more than a cup of coffee) falls to 5% or something very quickly.

The quick and dirty way for me was just using baseball reference's draft page and sorting by WAR. I really wish you could export an entire year's worth.. maybe you can with a paid subscription.

Google Sheet, importhtml function. It's free :)

Unless you bet something of actual value, it isn't really a bet.

I kid, I kid - it was just teed up to well not to make the joke.

I'd like to see something else in play here.

Like, if both of them make majors but don't do much, cruzer's reputation here at MTS is severely damaged but not completely tarnished.

If they both excel in the majors, he earns the right to never be questioned again.

If neither make the majors, some sort of widespread and public online character assassination is allowed.

No way the break even rate for an A ball reliever (on the DL with an elbow issue, by the way) and a senior sign catcher who has defensive struggles, both still in West Michigan, is above 70.7% each. It's an easy bet, even if cruzer's reputation is all that is on the line.

How in the hell does someone bet a reputation? What does that even mean?

If I win do I get his reputation?

Detroit Tigers, welcome to the 2016 mlb draft safe zone.

So many people to thank.

Starting off with Joba Chamberlain and his mind controlling Ausmus into letting him lose all the games.

Ian Krol for doing so well in Toledo and so horrible in Detroit.

The shoulders of Anibal Sanchez and Shane Greene for sucking away whatever effectiveness we thought they had.

Neftali Feliz: you came here late but caught on quickly

Alfredo Simon: for sucking like most of us thought you eventually would

Angel Nesbitt: for sucking like Feliz before Feliz

Tom Gorzelanny: for being a reliable replacement sucker

Victor Martinez: for signing a contract and getting hurt before you even made it to ST

Verlander's tricep and Miggy's calf: for temporarily de-railing awesome seasons

Hernan Perez: for being the worse here and the best in Milwaukee. Hope you like Wisconsin lol

Alex Avila: for aging 5 years in a month

Marc Krauss: for hitting a home run before not hitting anything hard or catching a pop up ever again

Nick Castellanos: for your elite base-running skills

No thanks to Nathan, or are you believing his injury was a net positive?

haha forgot about him. plus i was late for lunch.

I also neglected to give a special thanks to our manager Brad Ausmus, for thinking every veteran pitcher can go 110 pitches without risking injury or losing effectiveness, for thinking Preston Tucker was better than Jose Altuve, and for thinking Joba Chamberlain was better than Alex Wilson.

Hard to believe we are on the same list as the Rockies, Marlins, and Phillies. What a trainwreck of a season.

So we're only 8 games out of the FIRST pick in the draft?! We do have a race to follow in September after all! And if we repeat this weekend's performance a few more times, I have a feeling we might actually win it.

Looks like the 12th draft position is 3 games ahead of us. Unless something changes in the fight of the team, I don't see us being any better than Boston, who could probably match us in talent and they seem to be getting their **** together.

Everybody we play down the stretch is pretty hot right now and in the race, except for CHW and maybe TB. Even CLE is streaking and thinking about it I'm sure.

As such, I think top 10 is looking likely.

I don't know if we'll see an epic collapse, but I think the Tigers are in line for a pretty good draft position. Hopefully, they won't go for a hard throwing reliever with command problems!

Its a strong year for HS pitching, from what I have read. Also good year for college pitching and there are some good bats available. Looks like another light year for catcher, and there won't be as many solid infielders as 2015. Kiley McDaniel says that its a better draft overall than 2015, but that remains to be seen. I hope the Tigers can get a deep class that they have seemed to have gathered this year.

The Tigers have 32 games remaining, it might be tough.

the Marlins are on a pace for only 64 wins, and the Tigers already have 60 and JV has something like 6 starts left. If they win 4 of those they would have to lose every other game to tie the Marlins so that seems pretty unlikely. But I don't know if I've ever seen a team with 11 pitchers other than JV as bad as this one before. Lobstein might be a little lift. He was only OK tonight in Toledo in what should be his last rehab - good K rate but 4 ER. Sanchez might pitch again, but the question there should be "Why?"

And if the Marlins call up some guys with a little energy.....

The Tigers could pull off a nice heist in the draft if they can get the first pick under slot, leaving them with good money for solid players that drop. That's the advantage of having top picks.

Won't they lose their second and third pick if they sign certain free agents?
