I struggle to see him getting more than 2 years, $8M.

I think he has to take a 1 year deal for a backup job for one million.

2008 was a crap-shoot, IMO.

Round 2 had nothing of significant value.

Round 3 only had Craig Kimbrel, and he is a reliever.

I hated the 'draft relievers' strategy and remember posting about it at the time, but taking it all in I don't think it hurt the Tigers because the alternatives, overall, weren't any better.

That was one of the worst drafts I can remember.

I suspect that is what will happen.

But I could see some team liking the LH bat, convincing themselves he will be OK moving forward, and going 2 years to get him to sign.

I tend to agree with you, but I could also see a contract where it would be with a 3rd "option year" with a buyout or something kooky like that. Also I think Avila has a swing custom made for Fenway Park too.... That 28 foot difference down the right field line between CoPa and Fenway might indeed be career saving for someone's son....

I would love to see him retire, and take a job in the organization to learn the ropes. I think he can be an asset.

No need to go three years when no one else will go two.

Agreed.....The only team that would give him a two year deal is Seattle...... Legendary Lloyd probably thinks Alex can still hit.

I would be surprised if he got two years, especially with the concussion issues he has had. I think he would be tough to insure, but I don't know enough about that.

I didn't mean to derail the thread into an Alex Avila seminar. I will say if it turns out he still has something left I hope we find a way to keep him. Have always liked Alex.

Me too. Also think it will be good to keep the depth we have right now.

I remember going through the tigers drafts to see what it would look like if they had just taken the guy that was chosen with the pick immediately after their pick. Among the players on that list are Clayton Kershaw, Andrew McCutchen, and Nolan Arenado.

Again if we took the first two guys in your list it wouldn't have matter. They wouldn't be playing for us cause they would have been moved for Miggy.

I might take that. Add Arenado...tough call.

Every team could probably do that

It really looks like this will go down to the wire. We are still in line for pick 8, but with the same record as SD and CWS. We're only one game ahead of Seattle, who picks 11.

A strong finish could ruin everything.

The last series is the WS and our rotation sets up Norris, Boyd for the Rangers, then Simon, JV, Norris against the Sox. That is 4 of 5 with a decent starter. Norris/Hamels tonight features two guys both on a roll. Gallardo hasn't been sharp recently but who know how long they even let Boyd go tomorrow. I'd call that one advantage Tx.

The WS have Sale, Johnson, Shark as the last three. Sale against Simon favors the Sox solidly, JV against Johnson favors us. The last one depends on which Shark shows up.

Of course if both teams are tied for the 10th pick on the last day, it will be interesting to see if Norris and Shark both actually start.

If tied with San Diego and Chicago, they would pick ahead of us. Last year's record is the tiebreaker.

This is moot, though. With the rainout against Cleveland not rained out, a tie is unlikely at this point.

So, if I am looking at this correctly, Detroit is 73-85. They can "top out" at 76-85 assuming the rained out game in Cleaveland is not made up. I think we can book that not happening.

19 teams have 77 wins on the season. Or, 11 teams have no chance at 77 wins. One of them will be bumped from the compensation protection list.

Seattle is on the outside looking in at 75-84, and hosts Oakland for a 3 game series to end the season.

Chicago is the last protected team right now at 75-84, and hosts our beloved Motown Meowers for the weekend.

San Diego is tied with Detroit at 73-85 and hosts Milwaukee for 1 game tonight, and then travels to Los Angeles for 3 against the NL West champs.

So, if I am doing the math correctly, the Tigers' magic number is 2. Y'all got your Boones Farm ready to pop tomorrow?

If the game is never played, would the point be mute?

I'd like to give Mr Alex Avila a 1-2 year deal as a back up C.....I like the kid, he has moxie...or maybe the concussions have damaged his perceptions to he point that he doesn't really comprehend fear. At any rate, I think he might be a heck of a tutor for McCann. It could be viewed as an audition for a coaching spot.

Yes, magic number on the Mariners is 2, magic number on the CWS is 3. Probably want to still root for CWS to win tonight, that would guarantee that only a weekend sweep would doom us.

A white sox win tonight would be huge. No "probably" about it.

If the Tigers blow this it will be worse than 2009.
