Top 10 Draft Slot Watch

Recommended Posts

If a players is given a qualifying offer, and rejects it, he can sign with another team. However, that team loses their first round draft pick, unless they have a top 10 draft slot. Those picks are protected. This is extremely important for the Tigers going into the offseason.

Currently, 10 teams have a worse record than the Tigers, although there are a bunch of games still going on.

Anyhow, I've been tracking this for the last week and figured there might as well be a thread for it. Sad that it's come to this, but whatever.

Lose all the games.

Cespedes said this thread is "not smart".

it has to at least be smarter than the Thread of 1,000 Runs.

This could be a roller coaster thread.

Sort of like the Buy-Sell thread.

Some shouting "WIN!!!" with pride & hope that we do something crazy like get into the Wild Card even after the reboot.

Some whispering quietly "please get that top 10 draft pick...!"

And some of us confused. Yelling "WINLOSE!!!"... errr: "LOSEWIN!!!"... errr: "WUT?"

So....if we fall into a top 10 slot, we won't lose any draft choices if we sign multiple free agents?

Fall and then go out and sign them ALL!! :classic:

To be safely within the Top 10, we need Cincy or Cleveland, or better yet both, to go on a minor win streak, while we do the opposite...

I suppose it'd be better to be 10th than 11th, but I don't see us going after any guy that would require a draft pick anyway. Only possibilities are Zimmerman, Samardzija, and Upton. And quite frankly, I don't think they will go after Zimmerman (too many signs of decline for big money) or Upton (Cespedes or bust). I suppose Dexter Fowler and Alex Gordon would be possibilities too.

I think if they could squeeze Cespedes and Samardzija in the budget, DD would be one happy man. I think it's possible the budget could go up in 2016....they have saved a good amount of money this year and will want to ensure attendance stays up overall. No luxury tax in 2017 means there's no danger of compounding the penalty going forward. And, by staying under the luxury tax this season, a potential revenue sharing penalty is no-longer relevant.

If they do get a top ten pick, I hope they trade him before everybody realizes he is a dud.

I think this is exactly what we are going to see the next two months.

Baseball really needs to revise their rules. The NBA lottery causes the same problems but that is a harder fix in my mind because alternative ideas have their own issues. MLB could fix this problem easily.

The next road trip (KC, Houston, Cubs) is going to get through August 19th. I think we will be well entrenched in the top 10 by then.

No. If you have a top 10 slot, your first round pick is protected, but your next one is not. So if the Tigers were in the top 10 and then signed a QO FA, they'd lose their 2nd round pick.

If they signed two QO FAs, they'd lose their 2nd and 3rd round picks.

Taking a look at the standings, the Tigers would currently have the 13th pick in the draft if season ended today.

The following teams are certainly going to finish worse than the Tigers:

Philly

Miami

Milwaukee

Colorado

The following are a good bet to finish worse than the Tigers

Cincinnati

Atlanta

Oakland

Boston & Seattle are both bad teams that the Tigers have a decent lead on too.

That's 9 teams right there.

The White Sox, Indians And Diamondbacks are all just a tick behind us.

The Padres, Rangers, and Rays are a tick ahead of us. The Twins & Jays are not even that much far ahead of them.

The Tigers have bad starting pitching and a worse BP. But Cabrera should be back soon. JV has been good lately, Norris showed some stuff today.

I think a lot has to go wrong for them to get pick 9th or 10th. It could, it just doesn't seem all that likely to me. 11th or 12th might be as low as they get. I think they wind up somewhere between the 12th and 17th pick.

Right in the middle... sort of where I thought we'd be.

Halfway between the Wild Card and a Top 10 Pick.

Which direction do we shoot for?

Not really, we are bunched up with four other teams that would pick 10-13. No chance for the playoffs, but play to win. Que sara.

No chance at 4 GB with 45 games to go a bunch of other crappy teams ahead of us. Its never happened in the history of baseball.

Oh, hi to the Twins who were 7.5 games back of us on Aug 22 in 2006. 10 games back on August 7. There was no chance for them either.

That's easy. I'll take the wildcard spot. Getting to post-season is always the primary goal.

It's going to be about equally difficult to finish in the bottom 10 as it is for the WC. We are a better team than those who are below us.
