Really enjoyed Queens Gambit. The main girl did a great job! And it's a good thing because I didn't find any of the the secondary characters to be the least bit interesting. But she carried the show and it was a lot of fun. The end was a bit too predictable but that's ok.

FTR I thought I thought Office declined sharply after season 3 and wasn't the same after the writers strike in mid 2008/season 4.

Carell made it passable but his exit wasn't the reason for their decline imo. I thought they became way too "sitcomy" and less "documentary" which was the original premise the whole show.

Instead of subtle dry humor it became complete slapstick and over the top.

I recently plowed through the office after having given up on it in its penultimate season originally.

It was elite the first three seasons, slow decline with some good episodes until Carrell left. The episodes with Ferrell right after Carrell left were still good.  The bottom fell out after that with a slight recovery the final season.

Ultimately, ensemble comedies don't work when the cast is separated due to schedule constraints.

But... came in here to talk about the new season of Fargo. I thought it was good, but weak by Fargo standards, until this past week which was amazing.

Agree, plus the fact that nine seasons is way too long for most scripted shows, and The Office was certainly no exception.

Don't know what's taken me so long but I'm finally watching Peaky Blinders. Absolutely love it from the very first episode. Just started season 5.

We very rarely run series anywhere near as long as you chaps do. The Office original had two series - 14 episodes in total including a two part Christmas special. Fawlty Towers was the same and everyone who's been really serious about comedy in this country since then seems to have limited themselves to three sets of six as a maximum.

I really like the six episode max per series (aka season) you chaps seem to have settled on.

My wife and I are starting in on BBC's Roadkill tonight. Four episodes, wham, bam, thank you very much, next.

Interesting programme - worth watching for sure.

I just started Queens Gambit last night. Don't love the pill-popping child prodigy angle, but I will stick with it.

Seeing that the story is about a pill-popping child prodigy, that would be a tough angle to leave out. :)

Well it's not based on a true story or anything, so making her a pill-popper was a creative choice. Anyway, I finished it. I found the matches compelling, even though I don't play chess.

Spoiler

Having all her ex-boyfriends sitting around cheering her on was a bit much though.

I liked the mom, even though she was a mess in her own right.

They were all elites in that field. When one is a girl, you're going to get that. None of them were actual "boyfriends" so I didn't see any reason for them to just stop trying to help her. In their situation I thought it made sense.

Queens Gambit was very good.  It was nothing earth shattering, but a well told story.  The gay reporter...that was one thing that felt a little off to me...I feel like she fell super hard for him and I did not really see the build up to it minus the one meeting at that local chess tournament.....I guess it is because it was around the time she got her first period?

I thought the mom character was really good and portrayed very well.

I thought it made sense to have the guys rooting for her.

I would have liked to see more background on the janitors character.  I thought that would have made it a little better because he was a huge part of her early life.

Finished latest season of Fargo. Not quite as good as previous seasons, but still good. Nice callback to a previous season during the post-credits scene. One thing I wondered, but not enough to research myself, is was the child swap between gangster families really ever a thing? At least in the show, it never really resulted in the peace between groups that it was meant to... LOL!

3 episodes into Lovecraft Country. It's... ok. The acting is pretty bad at times but the story is interesting. If you're into weird, mysterious shows, it's for you. If not, don't bother.

edit: also the soundtrack is dumb and distracting.

Okay............now, I figured who he was when they announced Season 4 would be in 1950 and Chris Rock would be a lead.    But knowing how the threads from Seasons 1, 2 and 4 are woven together, did you think that when they were riding in the car in the post-credit scene that he was loading that gun to find the woman from the porch as an old lady?   I totally thought that.

And in Season 2 that character recites The Jabberwocky poem by heart.............I thought for sure that when he and the Rabbi were in the hotel on the run and the lady said there are books you can read, that he would have grabbed a Lewis Carroll book and kept reading that poem..........I totally expected that but it didn't happen.

Well, The Queen's Gambit certainly didn't evolve the way you think early on it's going to.

Not a series but the new Bee Gees doc on HBO is pretty good. I’ve seen much of the interviews before from a previous one but this does a nice job of framing and putting it all together.  Really well done.  I like the heavy focus on their pre disco stuff.

Not a series, but we watched Death to 2020 on The Netflix last night - Charlie Brooker, so it's a very, very dark comedic look back. I believe it's available in the US without resorting to a VPN.

It's very much not suitable to work, young children, those with sensitive ears etc... etc... (rates a 15 in the UK). It has a UK feel to some of it, and has lots of politics. If you read the political forum you'll certainly like it.

It is very dark. But then so was 2020.

Over the break we started Golliath and got through 2 seasons.  The second was weird and ended weird and the beginning to the thiird season is also pretty weird.  I have no issue with shows that try to be a little different, but it is jarring to see the real different mixed with the standard plots and standard love interests etc.  If you want to go off reservation, no problem, but to mix it with standard stuff was just weird.  I did not even really want to watch the thiird season, but my wife insisted.

I thought the first season was pretty good, leave it to Hurt to play a weirdo character like Donald.

I really want to get into the Expanse and want to see Sneaky Pete...watched most of the first episode of that and I like Ribissi so it is a perfect fit.

Ditched cable over the break and now have the gig internet which is amazing, the only thing missing is the random days we just want to put a cooking show on or something in the background.  Discovery + just came out so may subscribe to that.  Got Disney+, Netflix, Amazon Prime and 100 standard cable channels, with WAAAAY faster internet for over 130.00 less a month.  We got some room to add some additional streaming services, plus we can add Hulu once my wife gets her cousins sign in.

The outsider on HBO. Amazing first 5 or 6 episodes. Complete trash after that.

It followed the book pretty closely from what I recall.  I loved the book so loved the series.

I can see it being much better as a book. Visually, a lot of it just didn't work.

This show should have been more like The Leftovers. Let the mystery be. You don't have to see a male human growling like a bear. Kills any bit of reality the show had.
