A problem I had with House of Lies and am having with Ray Donovan is that the plot have obvious holes and the writing isn't tight, IMO.

I like the acting in Ray Donovan more (esp. Voight), so I am sticking with it for the time being.

I haven't watched House of Lies but agree on Ray Donovan. I've grown accustomed to it now though and it seems to add to the general lack of clarity of all the characters. It's a weird show, I'm sucked in by it but I've never recommended it to anyone.

Having made that juxtaposition, I don't find House of Lies or Ray Donovan to be that similar outside of the areas I mentioned.

I couldn't really recommend House of Lies to anyone, whereas I could for Ray D, depending on the individual and what s/he likes.

I haven't been watching a lot of shows recently. I've been on a reading binge. Therefore I'm better than all you morons.

Anxiously awaiting the 50 Shades prequel.

Doctor Who, although I was somewhat disappointed by last season.

My family and I just discovered Doctor Who this summer and are thoroughly enjoying it. We started with the 2006 season and are about halfway through the 2008 episodes, watching at least two episodes per night.

Also watching The Last Ship and America's Got Talent.

Did you read Seveneves yet? I am on my second trip through it now.

Damn, man. Slow down! Nope. Right now I'm almost done with "The Fold" by Peter Clines. Decent sci-fi novel. Seveneves keeps calling my name. I am gonna' attack it before too long. My reading list gets rearranged constantly.

Most of my reading has been the audible kind the past few weeks. An hour commute every day has let me listen to The Martian twice and Seveneves once...I am about half way through my second trip through Seveneves right now.

I think the writer gets a little wordy in things that mean nothing, but the overall story is pretty good. Especially the beginning. The end starts to feel weird to me.

True Detective. Been trying to keep up with all of the HBO Docs and watching some movies lately. Lately I have seen Mean Streets and North by Northwest on TCM.

I suppose there are plot holes in Ray Donovan, but at the same time I love the way its written.

I'll bite. I am now half-way through season 2.

Abby Donovan is Carmelo Soprano with a forced Southie accent. She just is.

Roughly 90% of the antagonists are one-dimensional, albeit occasionally quirky. Ray can physically intimidate almost everyone he comes in contact with, even professional law men and hardened criminals.

The show basically is what will Mickey do to piss Ray off, which in turn pisses Mickey off, and causes him to do something to piss Ray off.

No disagreements. Its not the best written show on TV by any means though. Abby is definitely Carmela, but there's nothing wrong with that necessarily. I think most of the main characters are well developed though, wouldn't you say? Ray,Mickey,Terry,Bunchy and maybe the kids. Even Avi and the lesbian chick aren't as much of one dimensional tropes as those types of characters usually are. Ezra was interesting as well.

The plot lines are pretty basic like you mention, but the style and pacing of the show are unique so I don't typically feel like I'm watching something I've seen before. I like how its all about family dynamics in the end. and yah, I like that Ray's the baddest *** mofo on TV,what can I say? lol

Edit - I"m pretty excited for some Al Swearengen in my life

Please note I only claimed the antagonists are one dimensional.

I think Ray's brothers both do a great job, his half-brother is fine in what he is asked to do, though there isn't much asked there, and I think Ray's employees and Ezra are fine characters as well. Kids can be taken or left - they aren't so different from the Soprano kids in that regard, to keep on that theme.

I assume the Swearengen comment means Ian McShane appears in season 3?

I have been meaning to watch banshee and strike back. I've heard they are pretty entertaining shows. I've seen a couple episodes of each and enjoyed them. I think they are both on Cinemax but the first seasons are on Amazon prime.

I didn't like Ray Donovan that much. I guess the premise just didn't interest me, but I don't really remember much about it.

Into the second season of Rectify. It's very good. It's slow-moving, but very good.

It's about a man in Georgia who was on Death Row for murdering his girlfriend when he was 18. 20 years later he is freed because of DNA evidence. He's very strange, and I think it goes beyond because he was on Death Row and I am not sure of his innocence either.

Bummed that Hannibal is cancelled after this season. There's talk that Netflix, Hulu or Amazon may pick it up. Very grisly show. Surprised that it made it this long on network TV.

Indeed he does, regarding Mcshane. I think we probably agree on what the show is fwiw

I've been watching Humans and Mr. Robot. The latter has a real Fight Club feel to it and is intriguing without being cheesy like a lot of network shows. On AMC is Humans and, after the first episode, I was intrigued but the main draw was the hot robot. The second episode expanded the characters a lot and I think this could be a very good show.

What are you watching?

I just started watching Humans as well. Very good show.

Anita is hot. Where do I get one?

I know people freak out about reading subtitles, but there is a new French television show called "Witnesses."

Absolutely fantastic. Dark and moody like "The Killing" and very grisly. The opening scenes grab you right away. I'll just say it involves grave robbing.

I download these shows from Usenet, so I don't know any other way to watch the show unless you're in France or Britain. Channel 4 in Britain is running the show now, that's how I heard about it.

I imagine if you're familiar with torrents it would be available that way.

The age of golden television is not just here in the USA. There's some great stuff going on "across the pond."

How far are you into it?

All caught up. Only the finale left.

EDIT: I'm ahead of AMC's broadcasts. I'm getting them from the UK.

This show is really good. Every time I think it's about to get predictable and corny, it takes a turn. I like that.

The scene where Anita/Mia is riding in the back seat of the car and the camera pans closer and closer to her face before she lets out that huge gasp was absolutely fantastic. She should win an Emmy just for that scene alone.
