Seriously. Look at past years free agencies , who hits the market and who gets paid. Its been C levels since Parise and Suter. Well besides guys like Miller and Vanek.

Petry is going to get over 5M if he hits the market. He's a #3 defenseman.

Am I crazy or is 7Yx5.8M realistic ?

I don't disagree, but I struggled to find a good fit in free agency who would sign in Detroit for a reasonable deal that fits the Wings' needs.

Guys like Jagr are perfect. Would you take a one year flyer on Michael Ryder?

As for defenseman. I have no idea whatsoever. Trade is my best bet. Dion at 7M>Petry at 5.5M.

Expect announcement Dylan Larkin leaving @umichhockey for Detroit Red Wings and will be available for Grand Rapids series vs Utica. #TSN

They're using an amateur tryout for him so that he can play right away and doesn't burn a year of his ELC.

I would have paid that price. I don't think that's a ridiculous deal. It's around market, as tough as that is to swallow. We're not going to upgrade our defense without either paying that much or giving him assets.

Canadiens get their man in Jeff Petry, but they paid a very high price | The Hockey News

Very nice to see, but it won't last long...both McDavid and Jack Eickel will probably pass him up, but there's no shame in that. I'm greedy, and would love to see him in a Red Wing uniform asap. I've seen him a few times in college and for Team USA, and I think he could pull off being the #2 centre for now.

Many pegged Mantha as a top six right away. He played on the third line in the AHL. No harm in letting Larkin remain in Grand Rapids. I agree with the need of a #2.

This is what I would love to see, but they'd have to do a lot of trading and somehow get rid of some "dead weight" like Ericsson & Weiss

Forwards

Justin Abdelkader

Joakim Andersson

Mitch Callahan

Pavel Datsyuk

Landon Ferraro

Luke Glendenning

Darren Helm

Drew Miller

Gustav Nyquist

Teemu Pulkinen

Patrick Sharp

Riley Shehan

Tomas Tatar

Henrik Zetterberg

Defence

Danny DeKeyser

Cody Franson

Mike Green

Nick Kronwall

Alexey Marchenko

Xavier Ouelette

Kyle Quincey

Goalies

Jimmy Howard

Petr Mrazek

I think a few moves, they could afford both Franson and Green. Those two along with regular playing time from Marchenko and Ouelette and you have your defensive overhaul - and it's not out of the question. When I first heard that the Wings could be in on Patrick Sharp (The Blackhawks need cap space, I guess), I thought why would Chicago trade within the division? Still hard to accept they are in different conferences.

The Johan Franzen issue is a huge problem. It doesn't look like he's going to retire, but he's not going to play again. How could you ever expect him to play again. It would be insanely dangerous. But his money will count against the cap if he doesn't retire, right? Not every guy is as generous as Brian Rafalski. I would love to see Mitch Callahan. He's shown he can actually play the game and that he's not really a goon, but he will mix it up and they kind of need that. Blashill knows him really well, so if he thinks Mitch has the talent, he'll be up with the team.

You wouldn't want Franzen to retire. If he retires they will get a cap penalty. If he indeed can't play again then putting him on LTIR every year (like Pronger) takes his money off the books each season.

What was Boston thinking on Dougie Hamilton?

The Wings could have by making this trade accomplished anything a tanked season could accomplish.

The Wings could have blown the Calgary offer out of offer, by so much Boston wouldn't even have to blink about trading him to a division rival.

This year's 1st. Either next year's 1st or Mantha. Plus Marchenko. Plus a 2nd. Hell throw in Pukkinen as well if they had insisted. Double hell, throw in Tatar or Nyquist instead of Pukkinen and I'd still make the trade.

I'm glad the Wings didn't do that. I really like (love) their pick of the Russian. Don't ask me to spell it right now.

Also, there's no way the Bruins would have given us Dougie, we're in the same division now.

That's the conventional wisdom, but I think a GM should always look for the best return when trading an asset. Your job is to make your team as good as possible, even it means a division opponent improving a bit as well or improving as much as you. Unless the GM is certain he is losing the trade.

Yeah, that is a switch from this morning. I wonder if this means the Wings have decided to try to do somehing in free agency.
