2015 Offseason

Recommended Posts

Well it is that time of the year again.

Here are Khan's big 3 questions

1. 1. Will Stephen Weiss be bought out?

2. 2. Can the Red Wings swing a deal for Dion Phaneuf?

3. Which players who spent all or most of this season in Grand Rapids will be on the Red Wings' roster in 2015-16?

and of course

4. Who will be the Red Wings Coach?

Ekland is stating

One team I am starting to hear connected with Mike Babcock the most right now is the New York Islanders.

HockeyBuzz.com - Eklund - Coaching Musical Chairs Rumors a Plenty; Thursday's Buzzcast

FOX SPORTS DETROIT: Keith Gave reports the trade deadline rumors of the Red Wings’ interest in Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Dion Phaneuf are likely to be resurrected soon. The Leafs want to rid themselves of Phaneuf’s $7 million per season contract, but the Wings prefer not to pick up the full amount. Gave speculates they’ll want the Leafs to absorb $2 million annually. The Wings also want to unload center Stephen Weiss’s contract ($4.9 million annually) plus they’re willing to include a “bottom-tier defenseman” (like Brendan Smith) and a lesser prospect in the deal. While Phaneuf has a partial no-trade clause, a source claims he’s willing to accept a trade to Detroit “to get out of that nut house in Toronto.”

NHL Rumor Mill – May 7, 2015 | Spectors Hockey

MLIVE.COM: Ansar Khan speculates on the possibility the Detroit Red Wings could buy out the remaining three years and $16 million on center Stephen Weiss’ contract. They might try trading Weiss, though it could mean picking up a portion of his salary. Khan also suggests the Wings might revisit their trade talks for Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Dion Phaneuf, which fell through at this year’s trade deadline. The Leafs declined picking up part of Phaneuf’s $7 million-per-season salary and had requested prospect Anthony Mantha. They also balked at taking back a toxic contract like Weiss’ in the deal. The Wings could also use Brendan Smith or Jakub Kindl as trade bait for blueline help.

THE DETROIT NEWS: John Niyo reports the Wings still need to add a top-four defenseman who can man the point on the power play, plus another big forward or two to help the Wings undersized scorers. Niyo also notes the Wings must shed Stephen Weiss’ salary, either via buyout or perhaps packaged with some young talent for Toronto’s Dion Phaneuf. While GM Ken Holland stated his intent to retain goalie Jimmy Howard, Niyo isn’t ruling out a trade after July 1 when Howard’s no-movement clause softens.

I wonder if the Wings want to re-visit the idea of going after Jeff Petry as a free agent this summer. Reading Montreal media and fans (I haven't watched him closely enough or often enough), seems like Petry has exceeded expectations in Montreal and has been playing like a #3.

I also wonder if Babcock's choice will factor in to the decision whether to buy out Weiss. Babcock clearly isn't a fan and has little use for Weiss. Would a new coach?

Also, will Larkin play in Grand Rapids or Ann Arbor next year? I'd like to see him continue at Michigan for another year, would be good for his development, IMO. Although I am fine either way. Hope that by the time he makes the Red Wings I stop automatically thinking his first name is Barry.

I was always curious why Weiss was either scratched or playing heavy powerplay minutes.

ok shanny, go get em.

I'll give it a shot.

Trade Smith, Weiss, 2016 1st, plus a bit more for Dion.

Re-sign Erik Cole to a one year 3.5M deal

2nd rounder for Cody Hodgson at 50%.

Z-Dats-Pulks

Cole-Hodgson-Tatar

Nyquist-Riley-Nyquist

Miller-Glendening-Jurco

Andy/Ferraro

Kronwall-E

Dion-DDK

Quincey-Marchenko

split in net.

Nope to Cole or Hodgson. Cole healthy was a good fit, but I have no interest in signing a guy with a spinal injury and having him miss part or all of next season. And IMO Cody Hodgson brings nothing to the table that we don't already have plenty of.

Yes to Dion. I'd like to pick up one more defenseman too (e.g., Petry), even if not a huge upgrade over some one you'd ship out, re-make the thing. So Kronwall Phaneuf DeKeyser Quincey Petry Marchenko in your top 6 - that's considerably better than this year's. Plus you'd have Mrazek and Howard roughly splitting equally time in net.

I know he isn't the prototype "big-body" winger that people feel we need, but would anyone be interested in taking a flyer out on Matt Beleskey, LW from Anaheim? He has a 30 goal a season pace and is under the age of 30? If the market isn't crowded with people who want to grossly overpay for him, I'd be interested in signing him.

Erik Cole could be good to go. If so, he's a perfect one year guy and surely adds a need with his size and skill. I personally think it's worth the risk, but again that's just me. Cody intrigues me. He too has had a serious back injury but the lockout year he put up great numbers on a low scoring team. He's young, has skill, a wicked ****, low value right now and is an interesting add considering we lack right handed centers. I also forgot Helm on my depth chart so it's one or the other... which I would take Cole.

Basically Pulkks is up for sure. AA and Mantha likely top call-ups. Can see Callahan being claimed.

Ericsson isn't going anywhere dude, but I have been super impressed with Petry. Montreal will definitely try and re-sign him. Michigan bonus though. 4Y, 19M perhaps. I personally do not see greatness, or the upside in Xavier as the others do. Dion pushes everyone down which is HUGE.

Jensen is out of waivers now I think.

Gustavsson likely done with Wings, never 'got in a rhythm' - Obviously, I never got in a rhythm. Then at the end of the season, we had two other goalies. Mrazek came up and played great. It wasn't much room for me, and I understood that.

Gus was really good in 13/14 but it was obvious it was a short-term thing, and that he would not be returning this season. We're good in net. A Howard/Mrazek split should be a good thing.

lliotte Friedman of Sportsnet told Toronto's Sportsnet 590 on Wednesday that "barring a major collapse," he believes the Edmonton Oilers soon will announce Todd McLellan as their next coach.

Edmonton Oilers appear out of Mike Babcock sweepstakes

Given the fact the Pens have announced they are retaining their coach, If Babs wants to win the best option is probably to stick with Detroit.

Toying around with potential off-season moves isn't as fun, nor as simple, with CapGeek having shutdown. However, I will still give it a go and go crazy I shall. This off-season is the summer where I want to take as many of Kenny's bad contracts off the books as possible. While I'd want to trade off Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Kronwall and Ericsson to reload on cap space, I feel I have to attempt to be realistic about this off-season, knowing that those moves won't ever happen. Being realistic means there won't be a fire sale on this team and that Holland and company will probably look to improve the defense through a trade and possibly make a small splash in free agency. In my view though, this is the off-season where contracts like Weiss, Quicney and Howard and come off the books.

Current Cap Space:

$11,817,955 (according to hockeybuzz.com)

Cap Space After Signing RFA's:

-$.483,000

Gustav Nyquist: $4.75 million/4 years

Brendan Smith: $2.25 million/2 years (sign and trade)

Teemu Pulkkinen: $1.25 million/1 year

Tomas Jurco: $1.2 million/2 years

Joakim Andersson: $1 million/1 year

Thomas McCollum: $1 million/2 years

Nick Jensen: $850,000/1 year

Trades:

Detroit and Toronto:

Detroit Gets: Dion Phaneuf and a 2015 2nd round pick

Toronto Gets: Stephen Weiss, Brendan Smith, and a 2016 1st.

*Toronto eats $2.1 million and makes it a wash cap-wise with Weiss involved.

*Detroit picks up 2.25 in cap space for having traded Smith.

Detroit and San Jose:

Detroit Gets: Raffi Torres, 2015 3rd round pick and a prospect (Nikolay Goldobin (RW) or Dan O'Regan ©)

San Jose Gets: Jimmy Howard and a 2015 2nd (via Toronto) . . . I'll throw in Jurco if it gets the deal done.

*We eat the Torres deal at $2 million for one year.

* We save $3.2 million by trading Howard to a team badly in need of a goaltender

Detroit and New Jersey:

Detroit Gets: 2015 4th + 5th round picks

New Jersey Gets: Kyle Quincey

*We save 4.25 million by unloading Quincey's contract

Cap Space After Trades:

$9.517 million

Unrestricted Free Agent Signings:

Matt Belesky (LW): $3.2 million/2 years

Johnny Oduya (D): $3.1 million/3 years

Jonas Enroth (G): $1.25 million/1 year

Cap Space After Signing UFA's:

$1.67 million

2015-2016 Roster:

Abdelkader-Datsyuk-Nyquist

Belesky-Zetterberg-Tatar

Glendening-Sheahan-Pulkkinen

Miller-Ferraro-Helm

Jurco/Torres

Andersson

Kronwall-Phaneuf

Ericsson-DeKeyser

Oduya-Marchenko

Oluette

Kindl

Mrzaek

Good work, Tater.

I think Leafs will do one of eating salary and taking on Weiss. Not both.

I am open to trading Howard but only if the return is good enough, otherwise content to wait until next summer.

I don't think Oduya will be easy to sign. I wouldn't dump Quincey unless Oduya or comparable was already in the bag.

I don't think Ferraro is an NHL player.

But good food for thought.

Couple things jump out to me,

I really don't like the idea of trading Howard. I really like the 50/50 split which would be really good for the benefit of Petr Mrazek long-term IMO. We're still competing so right now, having the two of them is the best thing.

Oduya and Quincey are pretty much the same player. Styles are the same and they're both around the same level. Oduya is also looking at 4+ million likely over 4 years.

Landon Ferraro looked like an NHL player to me this time around. I loved his game unlike his first call-up last year. Likely a 13th forward playing in 70 games.

Goaltending is fine.

Need a defenseman to push everyone down a notch improving the defense greatly. Anton Stralman would have been perfect but didn't even bother listening to Detroit, nor did I buy the hype. This defense needs offense too as Kronny is the only one doing something there besides Zidlicky who I don't believe will be back.

Forward. Really need another impact forward with Franzen pretty much done and Nyquist/Tatar showing inconsistent offensive play and Sheahan really being that ideal complimentary two-way player, similar to Morrison in Vancouver.

I seriously like the game of Cody Hodgson. Cody for Weiss intrigues me. I'm not into overpaying greatly in the market.

Grand Rapids will be fine as well. Nosek, Mantha, and AA down there is quite strong. Trvdon's play has been fantastic. Take it Holmstrom will remain in Sweden. Nasty and Bert full-time in GR. Frk looks improved. Callahan could realistically do anything. NHL, AHL in GR or elsewhere, Europe, etc.

I'm not sure if I agree with your detective work there, Lou. I think Kronny was terrible this past season. His drop off was alarming to me. He was barely a Top 6 NHL defenceman this past season and his drop off exposed Ericsson even more. I know Ericsson was hurt part of the year, but he was brutal all season. I wonder if Kronwall was hurt or if previous injuries are taking their toll.

As far as Zidlicky goes - To me he is the "be careful what you wish for" scenario. All year we kept hearing how desperate the Wings were for that right-handed shot for the power play. I didn't think the power play needed much help. It was startling to see just how badly the defense started performing right about the time they brought in Zidlicky. Even though he did bring a little to the table offensively, I thought he was maybe the worst defenceman I have seen wearing a Wings uniform since pre-Lidstrom. Yes, he was that bad (to me, anyway). I think the Wings should have maybe tried to carry 7 defencemen and just use him as a Power Play specialst. I will be glad to see him go. I want to see more of Marchenko & Ouelette next year, I want them as regulars and Zidlicky will only block their progress.

My Blashill as coach guess to an offseason:

Helm - Datsyuk - Abdelkader

Nyquist - Zetterberg - Tatar

Jurco - Sheahan - Pulkkinen

Miller - Glendening - Callahan

Andersson/Ferraro

Kronwall - Ericsson

Phaneuf - Quincey

Dekeyser - Marchenko

Kindl/Oulette

Mrazek

Howard

Ship Weiss, Smith, Sproul for Phaneuf, picks included shomehow. I would rather sign someone like a Petry or even a Mike Green over Phaneuf but the roster is too crowded without a trade.

Blashill is familiar and has had success with a lot of the players. I wouldn't be surprised if Callahan made the team somehow, he was skating on Blashill's first line prior to injury.

Kronwall isn't a top six defenseman? He did not bring Ericsson down. He simply needs help. He's in his prime on a very lousy defense.

drownwithyou, so the same besides Dion? Offense still has serious issues. Jurco, Sheahan and Pulks on the third line scares the **** out of me. One top nine injured at all-times too. Need more scoring. I have no idea whom though. Hopefully a year or two player until one of AA/Mantha/Larkin arrive.

I don't disagree, but I struggled to find a good fit in free agency who would sign in Detroit for a reasonable deal that fits the Wings' needs.
