The Red Wings have given Mike Babcock permission to talk to other teams. Holland said he's earned that right. He wants him back. Made him 2 offers over the weekend. Babcock wants to see what's out there. Teams would have to sign a compensation letter if they sign him.... a 3rd round pick.

Mike is going to the world championships to scout talent and clubs will talk to him there I guess. Wants a decision by the end of hte month.

This is pretty big. I would now be quite surprised to see him back. At least this helps brings things to a head.

I lean that way too.... but it could also just be due diligence on Babcock's part... maybe he feels he owes it to himself and his family to properly explore things. This could be his final contract in his career. Babcock's quotes like "You think the grass is greener on the other side but you know what kind of fertilizier you have been using"... "I don't want to be a GM, I'm a coach. I have a good GM"

This is smart by Holland in my opinion. If they made two offers and Babcock still wanted to explore, let him explore. If he agrees to something now they can get compensation since he's still under contract which would be nice.

Holland says he will not give teams permission to speak to Blashill right now, so I think that solidifies the Babcock or Blashill feeling.

I think it is happening guys... Babcock and Holland gave an interview together with Dreger, it will air tonight... Bobby Mac just tweeted:

‏@TSNBobMcKenzie

Regarding @DarrenDreger invu with Babcock/Holland (see last RT), Babcock won't be waiting until May 25 deadline to make decision on future.

Well Cotsonika is now saying Babcock will decide by next Friday. And:

Nick Cotsonika ‏@cotsonika 27s27 seconds ago

Babcock has not told the Red Wings whether he is staying or leaving yet.

Per the interview he'll decide by the 20th

Do you really do an interview with your current GM if you think you're really leaving? That's kind of odd.

I think what is going on here is that the offers he has are not compelling and he's trying to save some face by Lebron'ing it up a bit, stirring up some controversy "will he stay or go", then ultimately, he stays. Why else have your GM sitting next to you?

Of course, Babcock is a bit of a different dude, so this could also mean he bucks conventional wisdom and just decides to go. Who knows.....

Yep, I flip flop like a fish but I now think 90% he stays unless some team other than Buffalo, Toronto or Philly makes a late run at him. He's not going to any of those teams.

I don't think Babcock got as much interest as he - or we - expected. Sure, he is a very good coach who many teams would put at the top of their list if they had vacancies, but turned out few if any teams were willing to go the Les Moss-Sparky route. I wonder how differently this would have played out if the Leafs had done well all year and thus Carlyle's job had been secure - would there really have been a hype frenzy over a coach if not for Toronto media driving it?

IF Buffalo is offering 6 years @ $5mm/yr, it would be foolish of Babcock to turn that down and foolish of Illitch to match. But not I'm sure how solid is that offer rumor. WDFN tweeted earlier today that a WGR Buffalo beat journalist believes that, but it is not in either of their Twitter timelines currently.

Babcock should go to St. Louis. The Blues would be insane to stay with Hitchcock and not take Babcock if they had the chance.

Blashill will be in Detroit next year.

Babs and Hitch are very good friends. Hitch potentially moving upstairs makes sensem

Yeah, St. Louis would seem to be the ideal fit, but they're known cheapskates and they don't seem in a hurry to dump Hitchcock. If they wanted Hitchcock gone, they could have fired him the day after the season ended and started going after Bylsma or McLelland as well.

Babcock rumored to be in contract talks with Buffalo currently. The rumor is also that he likes Murray's hands off GM approach on the day to day stuff, more roster control for Babs, etc.

I don't mind the third round pick + Blashill coming up truthfully.

This was a case where I was undecided and honestly didn't know what I wanted him to do and I probably wouldn't know until it happened. Now that it looks like Buffalo is all but a done deal, I'm surprised that I feel pleased and excited about Blashill. I don't think Blashill is a better coach than Babcock and I'm wary of treating AHL success as a sure sign of NHL success, but I guess deep down I felt a change was welcome. Let Blashill sink or swim.

Kind of sums up my feelings.

Rumor is that Sabres have offered him a deal totaling around $50 million. He'll decide tomorrow morning, he's told reporters right now he doesn't know.

At this point, the 'process' (you must pronounce that with the proper Canadian long 'o') has certainly gotten ridiculous. After this long drawn out dog and pony show I think a lot of fans, and maybe some of the players, are past being ready to day 'good riddance if you don't want to be here'.

And I would include the owner likely feeling the same way as well. This is a franchise with 4 Cups and 6 SCF appearances in the past 20 years, I don't think Illitch feels any 1 person is bigger than the organization.

I don't see the process any different now than it was a week ago. Its a big decision to make. He said the end of the month and later said Wednesday.

Quotes like this from Malik crack me up and make me scratch my head.

George Malik @georgemalik

If he's all about the money, he's all about the ego, and that will tell Mike Babcock and the world all we need to know about Mike Babcock.

Boohoo, George. Do you think the Wings would have any qualms firing Babcock if he stayed with the Wings and missed the playoffs the next 3 years, just like how many Coach of the Years winners get fired soon after"? Babcock at this moment, which could be fleeting, where he has options and levarege. This is his career, he has a family, it's not about making a 'comfortable" living it's taking what someone is willing to pay and setting up your family financially for life. I wouldn't leave millions of dollars on the table, even if I figured I'd miss the playoffs every year. I'm sick of the process (and yes, Gehringer, I do pronounce it with a "long o", lol) but I haven't lost any respect for Babcock.
