He was pretty good in 2013. Looking at last year, he still had a decent strikeout rate, his FIP was under 4, and his BABIP was a career high. I think you still had to go into this season and give him a chance.

Yeah, I didn't have a problem with giving him spring training to see how we threw. Evaluate and go from there. I mean, he was already on the payroll, so its not like the Tigers were out anything more for kicking the tires.

I never had a problem with Joe Nathan bitching about the fans. I'd rather have a guy get frustrated with the fans and be open about it, instead of not giving a care about it like Prince did.

Sad way for a great career to end.

I was more frustrated with Ausmus for just making him the closer instead of having a serious competition for it.

Thanks for posting that.

That does NOT look good. Good meaning him pitching again anytime soon. Soon meaning the regular season.

Based on this I think we may be writing him off a little to quickly - he may have described the feeling like 'I broke my arm', but the way he was flexing it, swinging his arms and shoulder, even carrying his mitt off in his right hand as he went off, he still had a lot of mobility in the arm as he was going off. He couldn't throw, and maybe the did toast his UCL again, but that was sure nothing like the two times Zumaya actually did blow his arm on the mound.

That looks worse than when he decided to rest it iirc. Now I'm not sure if I'm recalling correctly when he decided to take some time to rest it. Didn't he pitch versus Minni? This looked painful.

Edit... Point is that it doesn't seem like he's getting better, but worse.

Oh yeah - he had some kind of real set-back today, but just to watch him on the mound, I'm not so sure we can assume what happened was a career ender - which seems to be the immediate assumption everyone is making. I imagine we'll hear tomorrow.

If he wasn't 40 years old and coming off the worst season of his career, I don't think people would be saying it is a career ender. It's also not the first time he injured his elbow and he had a "dead arm" all of last year.

Ausmus was asked about Nathan after the game. There was a pause and then he said they were going to hold off for a couple of days before making an announcement.

Hmm. That sounds conspiratorial.

or, they are sending an MRI to a second radiologist for a confirming opinion.

Alburquerque's fastball speed is down about 4 mph so far this year.

And he has lost what little control he had, again. Hopefully he can get right because having that big K option in the pen is huge.

Joe Nathan has "UCL tear and a flexor pronator tear. He will undergo season-ending surgery at a later date," Tigers say.

Does this mean his contract is paid by insurance? Should free up some money for the Tigers next year.
