Marek Zidlicky acquired for third round pick

Recommended Posts

Shoots right, but is fairly old. Waived his no trade clause to come to Detroit to win a cup. Not a lot to give up for him so I think it is a good trade.

If the Red Wings go to the Stanley Cup final, New Jersey gets Detroit's second-round pick.

Should put an end to the Dion Phaneuf talk, unless Holland is just trying to drive Toronto's price down.

2 solid moves by Holland. Improved weaknesses for a cup run without giving up major pieces and both are gone at the end of the year and won't block young guys. I love it. Cup or bust

This is my feeling. Haven't given up a top prospect or a first round pick and got a solid right shooting d man (best CF relative among the Devis' dmen although his zone starts are pretty sheltered) and a bigger scoring forward. Can't be too upset over that, well I can't at least.

Yeah, this is fine. It's a Cole-like upgrade. Depth and experience, give up little, doesn't tie our hands for future. I'd rather this than Petry. We can reevaluate roster in the summer, hopefully with a playoff series win or two behind us. I still would have preferred Phaneuf.

I'm getting the sense that the Leafs wanted a lot in return for Phaneuf, but just speculation on my part. I too would have liked getting him (as much as I dislike him).

So now I am wondering, even more so than a couple of hours ago, WTF were the Lightning thinking in paying what they did for Braydon Coburn.

So he's been playing like a solid 2nd pairing de-man this season? If so, cool.

That's what I'm gathering. Also:

NJ sends Marek Zidlicky to DET. NJ allowed fewest scoring chances per 60 minutes at even strength with Zidlicky on ice (among d-men)

From what I can gather online, they wanted at least Smith, Weiss, and a 1st.

I personally would say a good -> very good 2nd pairing d-man as opposed to solid, but to-may-to, to-mah-to....

I've read that this upcoming draft is quite good so I am not surprised they want to keep their first round pick. With their second gone for Cole I imagine Holland will try to do his usual trade down for two second rounders with their first round pick, but total speculation.

If it were Smith, Weiss, and a first... I think I would have been ok with it. I'm also ok with what they're doing too though. I guess I'm a Hollad slappy.

Given his salary, i think that is a bit high, but I haven't followed hockey near as closely as I have in the past lately.

FYI that the Devils have retained $1 million of Zidlicky's salary in that trade

What isn't completely clear to me, until I look at it closer, is whether they're comparing Zidlicky's play in 2014-2015 to that of 210 defenseman since 2012-2013, or Zidlicky's play since 2012-2013 to that of 210 defensemen since 2012-2013. If the latter, Zidlicky's 41 point season last year might be skewing things a bit.

I would have done that too, but I just never saw the appeal to Toronto in that. They're trying to get rid of players like Weiss, not add them. My uneducated guess is that the Leafs wanted Smith and a 1st and then the 3rd piece would depend on how much salary they were taking back.

We shored up our two biggest areas of need and didn't touch the active roster or give up a top end prospect? Yeah...Holland sucks.
