Wings Acquire Erik Cole

Recommended Posts

1. I want Phaneuf. And am willing to pay a heavy price for it. We'd wake up on Tuesday morning fans of a bona fide Cup contender

2. I'm afraid you're right about Franzen, but Helm is playing the best hockey of his career recently. He might be a good "sell high" candidate in the summer, depending on the injury tests, but until this weekend he had done a good job of staying healthy.

I told you it would be Marek. You need to listen to me. Phaneuf is a good player, but he's not worth the price/length of that contract. That's the Maple Leafs' problem. You should rejoice in that.

I think the majority of the Wings' fanbase, if asked to predict which if any defenseman the Wings would acquire, would have said Zidlickly. It was either him, Yandle, Petry or Phaneuf. Phaneuf and Yandle seemed to be deals too big for Holland to go hard on, and all signs were that the Wings were cool on Petry.

But I would have loved to have traded for Phaneuf, and yes I'm in the overwhelming minority with my view. He's not a rental. The fact he's 29 years old and signed for 6 more years is a good thing if you could get the Leafs to bring his salary down to $5mm. He is better than any of our defenseman not named Kronwall and he'd be our #1 when Kronwall starts to fade. Phaneuf is better at his position (top 30 D, IMO, or top 60 for sure) than Mantha is likely ever to be, IMO, so I would have not been opposed to moving Mantha to make it happen. Where else are we to find a #1 or #2 defenseman long-term? We ride Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Nyquist-Tatar-Kronwall-Phaneuf-Howard to a Cup final or two in the next 3-4 years and we'd have no problem signing a star winger to a contract in free agency in say 2018.

Sure, we can try to sign Mike Green this summer but he's not as good as Phaneuf and there will be tons in competition with us chasing him.

They don't need to sign a free agent defenceman in the offseason. They are loaded with defencemen. They just need experience and a mediocre vet or two to get out of the way.

Cole said he delivered an apology to new linemate Henrik Zetterberg from ex-linemate, Jamie Benn, for punch to head that injured Zetterberg.

Erik Cole had great answer when asked about losing to #RedWings in '02 Cup finals: "My dog died that year too. You want to talk about it?"

Cole sounded bitter about the SCF loss in his first trade interviews too, I guess I assumed that players (especially ones that have won a cup) let that stuff go.

I guess there is a small possibility that Cole was picked up because Franzen is out, maybe slight. But it had nothing to do with Helm or Zetterberg being injured as they will be back shortly. This may not seem like a huge name but it truly is a great fit for the Wings and exactly what they needed.

During last weeks 7-6 win over Dallas, Cole instantly became my personal #1 trade target. I ran out of fingers and toes trying to count how many times he out muscled the Red Wings defense down low, and more importantly in front of their net (Dekeyser at least 4 times). Knowing Dallas is out of the play-offs and figuring the Wings were not going to break the bank in acquiring a player- Cole seemed like a great target.

Basically I expect Cole to come in and just be "another guy" meaning I hope people aren't looking for a saviour. Having said that, the different demensions that his game will bring to this team is exactly what they needed. Size, speed, physical play and strength (especially his ability to score dirty play-off goals) is going to be a very nice addition.
